What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in technical support jobs.
- 1-3 years of experience troubleshooting hardware, software, and network connectivity issues
- Proficiency with ticketing systems and remote desktop or access tools
- CompTIA A+ or equivalent entry-level IT certification preferred or required
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for end-user and escalation interactions
- Working knowledge of Windows and macOS operating environments
- Associate or bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field
Tips for Your Technical Support Job Search
Tailor your resume to ticket systems
List the specific ticketing and remote-access tools you've used, such as service desk platforms or remote desktop software, by name. Hiring managers scan for tool familiarity before anything else, and a generic 'troubleshooting experience' line won't get you past an ATS.
Earn a vendor certification before applying
CompTIA A+, Network+, or a vendor-specific certification from Microsoft or Google signals baseline competency that many entry-level technical support postings require. Certifications often substitute for years of experience in screening, so prioritize them if your work history is thin.
Filter openings by support tier level
Tier 1 roles handle password resets and basic triage. Tier 2 and Tier 3 roles require deeper diagnostic and scripting skills. Applying to roles at the wrong tier wastes time on both sides, so match the tier explicitly stated in the job description to your actual depth of troubleshooting experience.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists technical support openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Demonstrate documentation skills in interviews
Interviewers for technical support roles frequently ask you to walk through how you'd document a resolved ticket or write a knowledge-base article. Prepare a short, clear example from past work. Strong documentation habits separate candidates who just fix problems from those who prevent recurring ones.
Negotiate shift coverage during the offer stage
Many technical support roles cover evenings, weekends, or on-call rotations, and employers often leave shift expectations vague until you ask. Confirm the exact schedule and on-call frequency before accepting. Negotiating schedule clarity up front is far easier than renegotiating it after your first week.
Technical Support Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most technical supports?
Amazon, Thermo Fisher Scientific, and SBF Search are hiring the most technical supports right now, with openings concentrated in Texas, California, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Demand is heaviest at large managed service providers and enterprise SaaS companies running 24/7 support operations.
How many technical support jobs are remote?
About 51% of technical support openings are fully remote or hybrid as of August 2026, making it one of the more remote-accessible IT roles available. Cloud support, SaaS platform support, and software helpdesk positions are the most likely to be fully remote, while roles involving on-site hardware or lab environments typically require in-person presence.
How do you become a technical support?
Start by building foundational IT knowledge through a CompTIA A+ certification or an associate degree in information technology. Practice troubleshooting on personal or lab hardware to develop real diagnostic instincts. Apply for entry-level help desk or Tier 1 roles to gain ticketed work experience, then pursue vendor certifications to advance toward Tier 2 and Tier 3 positions over time.
Can you get hired in technical support with little or no experience?
Yes, entry-level technical support roles are one of the most accessible points of entry into IT. Employers hiring at Tier 1 prioritize certifications like CompTIA A+ and demonstrated eagerness to learn over work history. Volunteering to manage tech for a school, nonprofit, or community organization and documenting what you fixed strengthens your resume when paid experience is limited.
What does the technical support interview process look like?
Most technical support interviews begin with a phone screen focused on your tools background and availability for shift coverage. A technical assessment follows, often a written scenario or live troubleshooting walkthrough where you diagnose a simulated user issue step by step. Final rounds typically include a conversation with a team lead assessing communication style and escalation judgment, since how you talk to frustrated users matters as much as how you fix their problems.
Where can I find and apply to technical support jobs?
You can find and apply to technical support jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search for roles that match your experience level and specialization, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
