What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in technical support jobs.
- 1-3 years of experience in a helpdesk or technical support role
- Proficiency with ticketing systems such as Zendesk, ServiceNow, or Jira
- Strong troubleshooting skills for hardware, software, and network issues
- CompTIA A+ certification or equivalent entry-level IT credential
- Experience supporting Windows and macOS operating systems
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for end-user documentation and escalations
Tips for Your Technical Support Job Search
Tailor your resume to the ticket system
List every ticketing and ITSM platform you've used, such as Zendesk, ServiceNow, or Jira, directly in your skills section. Recruiters filter on these tools first, and leaving them buried in job descriptions gets your resume skipped before anyone reads your experience.
Quantify resolution speed and volume
Instead of saying you handled customer issues, write how many tickets you closed per day and your average first-contact resolution rate. Technical support hiring managers scan for throughput numbers because they signal you can perform under real ticket queue pressure.
Filter openings by support tier level
Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 roles have different technical depth requirements. Search specifically by tier in job titles so you're applying to roles that match your troubleshooting depth, not wasting applications on positions that want escalation-level network or server skills you don't have yet.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists technical support openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare a live troubleshooting walk-through
Many technical support interviews include a scenario where you talk through diagnosing a common issue, like a user who can't connect to the VPN or a printer that won't install. Practice narrating your diagnostic logic out loud, step by step, before your first interview.
Negotiate shift differentials and on-call terms
Technical support roles often include rotating shifts, weekend coverage, or on-call rotations that affect total compensation and work-life balance. Before accepting an offer, confirm exactly which hours you're expected to cover and whether shift differentials or on-call pay apply to your schedule.
Technical Support Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most technical supports?
The companies hiring the most technical supports right now include Amazon, Vivint, and CVS Health, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Enterprise software vendors, managed service providers, and large healthcare systems tend to post the highest volume of technical support roles consistently.
How many technical support jobs are remote?
About 22% of technical support openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more remote-accessible roles in IT. Software-focused helpdesk and SaaS customer technical support positions are the most likely to be fully remote, while hardware support and on-site IT roles almost always require a physical presence.
How do you become a technical support specialist?
Start by building foundational IT skills through self-study or a community college program, then earn an entry-level certification like CompTIA A+ to validate your knowledge to employers. Get hands-on experience through a helpdesk internship, volunteer IT work, or a home lab where you practice troubleshooting real systems. Apply to Tier 1 helpdesk roles first, build your ticket-handling experience, and move up to Tier 2 or specialized support as your troubleshooting depth grows.
Can I get a technical support job with little experience?
Yes, technical support is one of the more accessible entry points into IT precisely because many employers hire based on demonstrated troubleshooting aptitude and certifications rather than years of formal experience. Earning a CompTIA A+ or Google IT Support Certificate signals baseline competency. Applying to Tier 1 helpdesk roles at staffing firms or internal IT departments at mid-size companies gives you the best chance of landing your first role without an extensive background.
What does the technical support interview process look like?
Most technical support interviews start with a phone or video screen focused on your background and communication style, followed by a technical round where you walk through how you'd diagnose a common issue like a network connectivity problem or a software crash. Some employers add a written or live troubleshooting scenario to assess your methodology. Final rounds typically involve a conversation with a team lead or hiring manager about how you handle escalations and work under queue pressure.
Where can I find and apply to technical support jobs?
You can find and apply to technical support jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from companies across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level and specialization, then apply directly to each one that fits.
