Job Description
Summary
The Business Relationship Banker is a field-based, growth-driven professional responsible for building and deepening relationships with small business clients while serving as a trusted financial advisor. This role is primarily performed outside of bank premises, with the banker customarily and regularly working in the field to source new business, conduct in-person client meetings, and engage with the local business community. The majority of working time is spent away from bank facilities conducting prospecting visits, attending networking events, and calling on prospects and existing clients at their places of business.
The Business Relationship Banker drives revenue growth by proactively identifying prospects, presenting tailored financial solutions, and closing new business. Success in this position requires a strong background in outside sales and business development, a consultative approach to financial advising, and the ability to independently manage a pipeline and achieve pre-determined sales goals.
Core Responsibilities
1. Business Development & Relationship Expansion
- Spend the majority of working time in the field, away from bank premises, conducting in-person prospecting visits, client meetings, and community outreach activities.
- Proactively identify and acquire new small business clients through in-person networking, field outreach, referrals, and outbound calling to schedule face-to-face appointments.
- Expand existing customer relationships by visiting clients at their place of business to uncover additional needs and present tailored financial solutions.
- Develop and maintain a robust pipeline of qualified prospects to achieve growth targets, managing all opportunities through the full sales cycle from initial contact through closed business.
- Negotiate terms, present proposals, and obtain signed agreements to complete the sales process.
- Utilize Salesforce to track field activity, log prospect interactions, manage follow-ups, and report closed business.
2. Consultative Financial Guidance
- Serve as the primary field-based financial advisor for small business clients, meeting customers at their place of business to conduct in-depth financial reviews and identify opportunities for product implementation.
- Provide expert advice on bank deposit and treasury products tailored to each client’s operational needs.
- Educate customers on digital banking tools and innovative solutions to improve business operations and cashflow optimization, primarily through in-person demonstrations and consultations.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for banking needs, ensuring a seamless and high-quality customer experience across all interactions.
3. Community Engagement & Partnerships
- Actively participate in local events, business associations, and networking activities away from bank premises to build brand presence and generate new business opportunities.
- Develop partnerships with community organizations to support small business growth initiatives.
- Represent First United Bank as a trusted mentor and advocate for local businesses in the field.
- Organize and attend community outreach programs that align with the bank’s mission and values.
4. Collaboration & Leadership
- Serve as an integral member of the Community Bank team, partnering closely with Retail Banking, Treasury Management, and Lending to deliver relationship-based solutions for small business clients.
- Actively collaborate with internal partners to identify referral opportunities, coordinate customer engagement strategies, and ensure consistent, high-quality customer experience across all touchpoints.
- Lead by example and mentor colleagues on best practices for business development and relationship management.
- Participate in periodic team meetings and contribute to strategic planning sessions as an incidental and minor component of overall duties.
Additional Responsibilities
The following duties are incidental and administrative in nature and do not constitute the primary work of this role:
- Complete all required compliance training annually.
- Adhere to First United Bank policies and procedures.
- Represent the bank professionally in all interactions and community involvement.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support organizational goals.
Employee Specifications
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma required; college coursework preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of outside sales, banking, or relevant business development experience with a demonstrated record of meeting or exceeding sales goals.
- Prior experience working primarily in the field or in a client-facing outside sales capacity strongly preferred.
Core Competencies
- Proven ability to generate new business in the field and expand existing relationships through in-person sales activity.
- Strong consultative sales skills and financial acumen.
- Excellent communication, time management, and decision-making abilities.
