Tips for Your Business Operations Manager Internship Search
Apply earlier than the semester tells you to
Large employers open summer internship applications the fall before, sometimes as early as August or September. Smaller companies and co-op programs post much closer to start dates. Check listings consistently from early fall onward so you catch structured cohort deadlines before they close.
Build a project portfolio before you apply
Intern hiring teams expect limited work history, so give them something to assess instead. For business operations manager candidates, that means documented case studies, process-improvement analyses, or operational dashboards with clear outcomes and the tools you used. A linked portfolio replaces the work experience you do not yet have.
Work your campus network and apply directly at the same time
Campus career fairs surface structured programs tied to your university, and professors or career center staff often know which employers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Applying directly to companies running smaller cohorts alongside campus activity widens the pool you reach and reduces your dependence on any single channel.
Practice the business operations manager intern screen out loud
Business operations manager intern interviews typically include case-style questions, process design, prioritization trade-offs, or operational problem-solving. Practice answering out loud and explaining your reasoning step by step, because interviewers weigh how you structure a problem as much as the final recommendation you land on.
Target rotational and cohort programs in the first wave
Larger employers run structured rotational or operations leadership internship programs designed to train people new to the field. These programs recruit early, fill fast, and offer broader exposure than a single-team placement. Identify the ones that fit your goals and submit in the first application window, not after you've heard back from other roles.
Set your work-type filter before you start
On-site roles are 71% of the business operations manager internships listed here. Decide what you can commit to before you start applying, then filter by location and work type from the beginning. Sorting through roles you cannot take wastes time you could spend on applications that actually fit.
Business Operations Manager Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a business operations manager internship?
Lead with coursework, personal projects, and a portfolio rather than work history, hiring teams expect limited experience at the intern level. For business operations manager candidates, a documented case study, process-improvement write-up, or data analysis with clear outcomes gives recruiters something concrete to assess. Combine direct applications with campus career fairs, where recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can a business operations manager internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. For business operations manager interns, what actually drives it is performance on real work, delivering projects on time, flagging problems early, and demonstrating ownership. Team headcount and return-offer timelines also matter. Position for one by treating every assignment seriously, without counting on it as a given.
When should I apply for business operations manager internships?
Earlier than most expect. Large employers recruit summer interns the preceding fall, so deadlines can arrive before many students start looking. Smaller companies and co-op programs post much closer to start dates, which means openings appear year-round. Checking listings consistently rather than waiting for a single recruiting season gives you the widest set of options.
Are business operations manager internships paid?
Most professional business operations manager internships in the U.S. are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location, so there is no single standard. Where an employer discloses pay, it appears directly on the listing, filter by listings that show compensation if that detail matters to your decision.
What should a business operations manager internship resume include?
Lead with projects, not work history. Include two or three complete, documented projects that name the tools you used and link to the work, for business operations manager candidates, that means published process analyses, case studies, workflow redesigns, or dashboard builds reviewers can actually open. Add relevant coursework, keep the whole document to one page, and cut anything that does not speak to operations work.
Are there remote business operations manager internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 29% of the business operations manager internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill fast because they attract applicants from across the country, so apply early. Use the work-type filter to see only remote or hybrid roles from the start rather than sorting through the full listing set.
Can international students get business operations manager internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
