Chief Architect Jobs in New Mexico: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a chief architect in New Mexico?
You must hold an active architect license from the New Mexico Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Professional Surveyors, which requires an NAAB-accredited degree, completion of the Architectural Experience Program, and passage of the Architect Registration Examination. From there, reaching a chief architect role typically means building a portfolio of large-scale project leadership in civic, federal, or institutional work, which are the sectors that dominate senior hiring in New Mexico.
How much do chief architects make in New Mexico?
Chief architects in New Mexico earn a median of about $77,720 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $47,840 for the lowest 10% to over $120,090 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire chief architects in New Mexico?
Companies currently hiring chief architects in New Mexico include US Department of Veterans Affairs, State of New Mexico, and Los Alamos National Laboratory, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. New Mexico's hiring is anchored by government contractors, federal research institutions, and established regional architecture firms serving public and higher education clients.
Which New Mexico cities have the most chief architect jobs?
Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Los Alamos are the cities with the most chief architect openings in New Mexico. Albuquerque leads because it is home to the state's largest federal agencies, research institutions, and architecture firms, while Santa Fe draws hiring through state government projects and historic preservation work, and Las Cruces has grown as New Mexico State University and regional development expand the local project pipeline.
Are there remote chief architect jobs in New Mexico?
Yes, but they're rare. About 6% of chief architect openings tied to New Mexico are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, which reflects that the role typically requires site visits, client meetings, and hands-on construction administration that cannot be done fully remotely. Schematic design, documentation, and team coordination are the tasks most likely to be performed off-site on a hybrid arrangement.
How can I get hired as a chief architect in New Mexico with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is joining an established New Mexico architecture firm or a federal contractor like Sandia National Laboratories or a state agency as a junior designer or project architect, where you build toward licensure while working on real projects. Firms like Dekker/Perich/Sabatini and SMPC Architects have historically hired recent graduates and develop them through mentored project work. Getting your New Mexico architect license early and building a portfolio in civic or institutional projects positions you for the leadership roles that large public-sector clients require.
Where can I find and apply to chief architect jobs in New Mexico?
You can find and apply to chief architect jobs in New Mexico on Migrate Mate, which lists current New Mexico openings. Search the listings, find roles that fit your experience and specialization, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
