- Deep expertise in cloud-native design (AWS, Azure, hybrid cloud).
- Strong proficiency in one or more core languages (e.g., Python, Java, C++).
- Deep expertise of software development methodologies, including Agile, DevSecOps, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), CI/CD, and vertical slice/full-stack development approaches, with experience in implementing best practices for enterprise software, at scale.
- Exceptional communicator—able to align executives, engineers, and partners around a shared technical direction.
- Active TS/SCI clearance or a TS with eligibility to obtain an SCI and willingness to complete a CI polygraph.
- This position is onsite in the Colorado Springs, CO area requiring up to 25% travel.
Highly Desired
- Experience supporting USSF/SSC, space domain awareness, C2, or ISR mission areas.
- Familiarity with A&A, RMF, CMMI, or equivalent accreditation frameworks.
- Record of influence in national-level software modernization or enterprise architecture initiatives.

Tips for Your Chief Architect Job Search
Align your portfolio to business outcomes
Chief architect candidates who win interviews show how their architecture decisions cut costs, reduced system downtime, or enabled a product launch. Reframe every project on your resume around the business result it drove, not just the technical stack you used.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists chief architect openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Tailor your resume to the architecture domain
Enterprise architecture roles weight TOGAF and long-horizon roadmap experience heavily, while cloud architecture roles prioritize AWS, Azure, or GCP certifications and migration scale. Read each job posting carefully and reorder your resume bullets to lead with what that domain prizes most.
Demonstrate cross-functional leadership in your application
Chief architect roles involve steering engineering, product, and executive stakeholders simultaneously. Your resume and cover letter should name the specific groups you aligned, the friction you resolved, and the decisions you drove, not just the systems you designed.
Prepare a system-design narrative for interviews
Most chief architect interview loops include a whiteboard or verbal walkthrough of a large-scale system you designed. Practice explaining your trade-off reasoning out loud: why you chose one pattern over another, what you would change now, and how you handled constraints you could not control.
Negotiate scope and authority, not just compensation
At this level, reporting structure and decision-making authority matter as much as pay. Before accepting an offer, clarify whether you own final architecture decisions or advise on them, and confirm which teams you have direct influence over.
Chief Architect Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most chief architects?
The companies hiring the most chief architects right now include SAIC, ASRC Federal, and CACI International, with the largest share of openings in Virginia, Maryland, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Demand is concentrated in large enterprises and consulting firms undertaking major cloud transformation or modernization programs.
How many chief architect jobs are remote?
About 55% of chief architect openings are fully remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the strategic and advisory nature of the role. Cloud architecture and enterprise architecture sub-specializations tend to offer the highest share of remote arrangements, while roles requiring on-site stakeholder alignment or data center oversight are more likely to require in-person presence.
How do you become a chief architect?
Most chief architects progress from software engineer to solutions or enterprise architect before stepping into the chief role. Along the way, you build credibility by leading increasingly large architecture decisions, earning domain certifications, and taking ownership of cross-team technical strategy. Developing a record of aligning architecture choices to measurable business outcomes is what separates candidates who reach this level from those who plateau at senior architect.
Can you get hired as a chief architect without prior experience at that title?
Yes, if you can demonstrate that you have been operating at that scope even without the title. Hiring managers look for candidates who have owned architecture decisions affecting the full organization, led governance or standards bodies, and influenced executive-level technology strategy. Document those contributions explicitly on your resume and be prepared to walk through them in detail during interviews.
What does the chief architect interview process look like?
The process typically opens with a recruiter screen, followed by a technical architecture discussion with senior engineers or a VP of Engineering, and then a system design or architecture review exercise where you walk through a past design or a hypothetical at scale. Later rounds usually include a leadership and stakeholder alignment conversation with executives and, in some cases, a presentation of your architecture philosophy or a take-home design challenge.
Where can I find and apply to chief architect jobs?
You can find and apply to chief architect jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings for roles that match your domain, seniority, and location preferences, then apply directly to each one that fits.
