- Proficiency in discipline-specific software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or ETAP

Tips for Your Professional Engineer Job Search
List your PE license prominently
Recruiters filter for licensure status before reading anything else. Put your PE license, state of licensure, and license number in a dedicated credentials section at the top of your resume, not buried under education.
Tailor your resume to the discipline
A civil PE applying to a structural role and a mechanical PE applying to an HVAC role need different resumes. Swap in discipline-specific project names, software tools, and code references so the hiring manager sees direct relevance immediately.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists professional engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Quantify project scope and outcomes
Hiring managers want to see scale, not just duties. Replace vague descriptions with concrete project details: budget managed, team size, schedule delivered, or a specific design challenge you resolved. That specificity is what separates PE resumes in competitive shortlists.
Prepare for technical design reviews
Many PE interviews include a whiteboard or take-home design problem in your discipline. Practice walking through your reasoning out loud, citing applicable codes and standards, and explaining where you'd apply engineering judgment when specs are incomplete.
Negotiate using scope, not just title
Before accepting an offer, clarify what projects you'd own, which codes govern the work, and whether the role leads to PE of Record responsibilities. Scope and autonomy affect your long-term marketability as much as compensation does.
Professional Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most professional engineers?
The companies hiring the most professional engineers right now include Westwood Professional Services, WSP, and BKF Engineers, with the largest share of openings in Texas, California, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is consistently strong in infrastructure, utilities, and defense contracting sectors.
How many professional engineer jobs are remote?
About 31% of professional engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though most PE roles involve site visits or lab work that limits full-time remote arrangements. Sub-disciplines with the highest remote share tend to be structural review, electrical system design, and engineering consulting roles where deliverables are primarily document-based.
How do you become a professional engineer?
You become a professional engineer by earning an accredited engineering degree, passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, accumulating supervised work experience under a licensed PE, and then passing the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam in your discipline. Each state sets its own experience requirements, so confirm the rules with your state licensing board before applying.
Can you get a professional engineer job with little experience?
Yes, entry-level PE roles exist specifically for candidates who have passed the FE exam and are working toward licensure. Many firms hire engineers-in-training and structure mentorship around the PE exam timeline. Focus your search on roles with titles like engineer I, engineer-in-training, or junior engineer, and highlight relevant internship or co-op projects in your application.
What does the professional engineer interview process look like?
The professional engineer interview process typically includes an initial phone screen with HR, followed by a technical interview with engineering leads covering design methodology, code application, and a review of your past project work. Many firms add a panel interview with project managers or clients. Some disciplines include a take-home design problem or code-compliance exercise before a final offer.
Where can I find and apply to professional engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to professional engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search by discipline, location, or seniority level to find roles that match your background, then apply directly to each listing without leaving the platform.
