Program Overview
About The Role
Peraton's Department of the Interior (DOI), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), and NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) have identified a critical gap in the federal government's ability to conduct comprehensive Endangered Species Act (ESA) research. While FWS operates an authoritative web-based platform for managing data for terrestrial and freshwater species, it does not currently include NMFS marine and anadromous species data forcing agencies to rely on separate, manual processes. This program closes that gap by integrating marine and anadromous species data into the existing FWS platform, creating a single, unified experience for all ESA-listed species.
Peraton is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to lead Information for Planning and Consultation (IPaC) website application architecture updates and API integration for a federal data migration program. You will design and implement the integration between the federal consultation platform and the cloud data infrastructure, enabling new species data to flow seamlessly into existing consultation workflows.
Work Location: Remote
Day To Day Roles and Responsibilities
- Lead application architecture updates to support new species data integration, ensuring all changes comply with platform constraints and IT governance standards
- Design and implement API integration between the application and the cloud data platform, enabling species data retrieval for consultation workflows
- Implement new species display functionality within the platform, including habitat designations, listing status, and regulatory requirements
- Develop programmatic consultation logic alignment updates, implementing joint agency consultation handling logic
- Support the establishment and maintenance of the demo environment for government demonstrations
- Support interoperability testing by resolving application-layer defects identified during testing
- Contribute to the IPaC UI and Logic Update Package, delivering all application-layer integration components including API connections, species display functionality, and joint agency consultation handling logic for government review
- Support delivery of Updated DKeys and Consultation Package Builder Assets by implementing platform-side integration updates required to support new DKey content and consultation package assembly workflows
- Execute production cutover application deployment activities per the approved migration playbook
- Contribute to the Final Operational Playbooks by documenting application maintenance procedures and incident response protocols

- Extensive experience with software development with a focus on federal application integration
- Experience designing and implementing REST API integrations between federal applications and cloud data platforms
- Proficiency in Java, Python, or equivalent backend development languages
- Experience with Git or equivalent version control platforms for federal application code management and deployment
- Experience with federal software development standards and FedRAMP-compliant deployment
- Familiarity with Section 508/WCAG 2.0 accessibility requirements for federal application development
- Familiarity with federal IT governance frameworks and platform constraint management
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with the Information for Planning and Consultation (IPaC) platform or similar federal environmental decision support systems
- Familiarity with DKey systems or consultation package builder platforms within federal environmental decision support tools
- Familiarity with Databricks or cloud data lakehouse API integration

What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in api engineer jobs.
- Proficiency designing and documenting RESTful APIs and OpenAPI specifications
- Experience with authentication protocols including OAuth 2.0 and API key management
- Hands-on work with API gateways such as Kong, Apigee, or AWS API Gateway
- Familiarity with GraphQL schema design and query optimization

- Experience writing integration tests and contract tests for API endpoints
Tips for Your Api Engineer Job Search
Tailor your resume to API specifics
List the API protocols you've worked with, such as REST, GraphQL, and gRPC, alongside the frameworks and gateways you've used. Hiring managers scan for these terms first, so generic backend descriptions will not get you past the initial screen.
Highlight versioning and deprecation experience
Many api engineer postings specifically call out versioning strategy and backward compatibility. If you've managed a v1-to-v2 migration or led a deprecation cycle, call that out explicitly in your resume's experience bullets, not just your skills list.
Filter openings by integration stack
API roles vary widely depending on whether the team uses OAuth, API gateways like Kong or Apigee, or internal service meshes. Targeting openings that match the tools you know best increases your interview-to-offer conversion significantly.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists api engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare a live API demo or public spec
A published OpenAPI spec or a small demo API on GitHub lets hiring managers evaluate your design sensibility before the first call. Interviewers frequently review candidates' public work ahead of technical screens for api engineer positions.
Negotiate on scope, not just compensation
After receiving an offer, ask about ownership over API standards decisions and involvement in roadmap planning. Api engineers who clarify design authority upfront tend to avoid friction later, and it signals seniority to the hiring team during negotiation.
Api Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most api engineers?
The companies hiring the most api engineers right now include OpenAI, Cognizant, and Capital One, with the largest share of openings in California, Virginia, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Fintech and enterprise SaaS companies tend to post the highest volume of these roles consistently.
How many api engineer jobs are remote?
About 87% of api engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the role's strong alignment with distributed engineering teams. Platform and integration-focused api engineer positions tend to be the most remote-friendly, while roles tied to on-premises infrastructure or regulated data environments more often require on-site presence.
How do you become a api engineer?
Start by building a solid foundation in HTTP fundamentals, RESTful design principles, and at least one backend language such as Python, Node.js, or Java. Work through projects that involve designing, securing, and documenting APIs end to end. Learn versioning strategies and authentication flows, then publish a real API with a public OpenAPI spec to demonstrate your work to employers.
Can you get hired as a api engineer with little experience?
Yes, entry-level api engineer roles exist, particularly at companies building internal developer tooling or expanding integration layers. Focus your applications on positions that list REST and OAuth as requirements rather than advanced gateway orchestration. A portfolio with a documented, functional API project carries significant weight when formal experience is limited, especially if it shows clean error handling and versioning.
What does the api engineer interview process look like?
Most api engineer interviews start with a recruiter screen focused on your background and tool familiarity, followed by a technical phone screen testing API design concepts and HTTP mechanics. A take-home or live coding exercise typically involves designing an endpoint or debugging an integration. Final rounds usually include a system design discussion and a conversation with engineering leadership about standards and ownership.
Where can I find and apply to api engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to api engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience and stack, then apply directly to each one that fits.
