Obtain or initiate security clearance eligibility
Many Boeing Software Engineer roles require a U.S. security clearance. Visa holders can hold certain clearance levels, but confirm you're applying to roles that don't list citizenship as a requirement before investing time in the application process.
Target Boeing's defense and autonomous systems divisions
Boeing's defense programs, including autonomous systems and connected aircraft software, consistently post software engineering roles. Filtering by these business units surfaces positions more likely to carry active visa sponsorship support than some commercial aviation teams.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Boeing software roles by visa type
Not every Boeing job listing advertises sponsorship availability upfront. Use Migrate Mate to search Boeing Software Engineer openings filtered by the specific visa type you hold or need, so you're only applying to roles where your status is a fit.
Align your resume to DOD software standards
Boeing's defense contracts often reference specific software frameworks and compliance standards. Tailoring your resume to reflect experience with safety-critical or embedded systems signals to Boeing recruiters that you understand the regulatory environment they operate in.
Ask Boeing's recruiter which Green Card pathway applies
Boeing sponsors both EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards for Software Engineers. The pathway depends on the role's degree requirements and prevailing wage tier. Ask the recruiter or HR contact which PERM-based category they typically file for the specific position you're targeting.

Find Software Engineer at Boeing JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Boeing sponsor H-1B visas for Software Engineers?
Yes, Boeing sponsors H-1B visas for Software Engineer roles. Because Boeing is subject to the annual H-1B cap, sponsorship depends on lottery selection each April unless you already hold H-1B status through a previous employer. Boeing also supports H-1B1 sponsorship for Chilean and Singaporean nationals, which bypasses the lottery entirely.
How do I apply for Software Engineer jobs at Boeing?
Applications go through Boeing's careers portal at boeing.com/careers. Filter by job category and location, then review each listing for any citizenship or clearance requirement before applying. You can also browse Boeing Software Engineer roles filtered by visa type on Migrate Mate, which makes it easier to identify positions that match your current immigration status.
Which visa types does Boeing commonly use for Software Engineer roles?
Boeing sponsors H-1B, H-1B1, TN, and F-1 OPT and CPT for Software Engineers in nonimmigrant categories. For permanent residence, Boeing files PERM-based EB-2 and EB-3 petitions depending on the role's degree requirements and DOL prevailing wage tier. TN sponsorship is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying software engineering occupations.
What qualifications does Boeing expect for sponsored Software Engineer roles?
Most Boeing Software Engineer positions require a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field, which satisfies the H-1B specialty occupation requirement. Many roles also expect experience with safety-critical systems, embedded software, or aerospace-specific frameworks. Some positions carry a U.S. person requirement, meaning visa-sponsored candidates are not eligible for those specific openings.
How do I manage the H-1B timeline if I'm transitioning from F-1 OPT at Boeing?
Boeing would need to file your H-1B registration during the March lottery window for an October 1 start date. If your OPT expires before October 1 and your petition was selected, cap-gap protection through USCIS automatically extends your work authorization. Start the conversation with Boeing's HR team well before your OPT end date to avoid gaps in employment authorization.
