Align your resume with Amazon's Leadership Principles
Amazon's hiring process weights behavioral competencies heavily. Framing your engineering experience around ownership, customer obsession, and delivering results signals culture fit and moves you past initial resume screens faster than technical credentials alone.
Target roles matching your specific engineering specialty
Amazon posts Software Engineer openings across distinct orgs, including AWS, Alexa, Devices, and Advertising. Applying to teams where your stack aligns directly with the org's core product increases sponsorship likelihood, since managers sponsor for genuine skill gaps.
Confirm visa type eligibility before accepting an offer
Amazon sponsors H-1B, E-3, and H-1B1 visas depending on your nationality. If you're Australian, the E-3 sidesteps the H-1B lottery entirely. Clarify which category your recruiter is filing under before signing, since the process and timeline differ meaningfully.
Prepare your degree equivalency documentation early
USCIS requires a bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field for specialty occupation classification. If your degree is from a non-U.S. institution or in a tangentially related field, get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency before your employer files the petition.
Understand the LCA filing requirement and your rights
Before Amazon can file your H-1B or E-3 petition, it must certify a Labor Condition Application with the DOL confirming your offered wage meets prevailing wage standards. You're entitled to review the LCA, and your employer must post it at your worksite.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Software Engineer roles at Amazon
Tracking which Amazon teams are actively hiring and sponsoring visas is time-consuming. Migrate Mate surfaces sponsoring employers and open roles in one place, so you can focus your applications on Amazon positions where visa sponsorship is confirmed and available.

Find Software Engineer at Amazon JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Amazon sponsor H-1B visas for Software Engineers?
Yes, Amazon sponsors H-1B visas for Software Engineers and is one of the most active H-1B filers in the technology sector. Sponsorship applies across engineering levels, from new grad SDE roles through senior and principal positions. Your offer letter will confirm which visa category Amazon is filing, and your start date will depend on the H-1B cap lottery timeline if you're subject to it.
How do I apply for Software Engineer jobs at Amazon?
Applications go through Amazon's careers portal at amazon.jobs. Most Software Engineer roles require an online assessment followed by a phone screen and a virtual or on-site loop of four to six interviews covering coding, system design, and behavioral questions based on Amazon's Leadership Principles. You can also browse open Software Engineer roles at Amazon that sponsor visas through Migrate Mate to identify positions aligned with your visa category before applying.
Which visa types does Amazon sponsor for Software Engineers?
Amazon sponsors H-1B, H-1B1, and E-3 visas for Software Engineers, as well as employment-based Green Cards through the EB-2 and EB-3 categories. H-1B1 is available to nationals of Singapore and Chile, and the E-3 is exclusive to Australian citizens. For long-term immigration pathways, Amazon typically initiates PERM labor certification after an engineer has been employed in a qualifying role for a period of time.
What qualifications does Amazon expect from Software Engineer candidates seeking sponsorship?
Amazon's Software Engineer roles generally require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related technical field. This degree requirement directly supports USCIS specialty occupation classification for H-1B and E-3 petitions. Strong candidates also demonstrate proficiency in one or more programming languages, experience with distributed systems or cloud architecture, and the ability to solve complex engineering problems at scale.
How do I navigate the visa filing timeline after receiving a Software Engineer offer from Amazon?
Timeline depends on your visa type. H-1B petitions are filed in April for an October 1 start, meaning an offer accepted in early spring may result in a six-month wait if you're not already in H-1B status. E-3 and H-1B1 petitions have no annual lottery and can be filed and approved faster. Amazon's immigration team typically coordinates directly with external counsel once you accept an offer, but confirm the projected start date before resigning from any current role.
