Align your CMA certification before applying
Duke's clinical hiring teams expect active CMA certification from AAMA or NHA before extending an offer. If your credential is from outside the U.S., confirm equivalency early, because gaps here stall sponsorship conversations before they start.
Target Duke Health's outpatient clinic postings
Certified Medical Assistant openings at Duke are concentrated in ambulatory and specialty care, not inpatient units. Filter your search by Duke Health's outpatient locations to find the roles most likely to carry sponsorship support from the central HR team.
Understand E-3 eligibility for Australian applicants
Duke sponsors E-3 visas for qualifying clinical roles, and the E-3 has no lottery, so timelines are far more predictable than H-1B. If you hold Australian citizenship, confirm your job offer includes an LCA filing with the DOL before signing anything.
Use Migrate Mate to identify open CMA roles
Sponsorship-eligible CMA postings at Duke can be hard to surface through general job boards. Search Migrate Mate to filter for Duke University roles that actively support visa sponsorship, so you're not applying blind to positions that won't move forward.
Prepare for H-1B cap timing if you're not cap-exempt
Duke University qualifies as a cap-exempt employer, which means H-1B petitions for Duke Health roles can be filed year-round and aren't subject to the April lottery. Confirm your specific position falls under the university's cap-exempt umbrella before counting on this benefit.

Does Duke University sponsor H-1B visas for Certified Medical Assistants?
Yes, Duke University sponsors H-1B visas for Certified Medical Assistant roles. As a cap-exempt employer, Duke can file H-1B petitions with USCIS at any time of year, bypassing the annual lottery. This makes H-1B sponsorship significantly more accessible here than at private-sector employers. You'll still need active CMA certification and a qualifying specialty occupation determination from Duke's HR team before the petition moves forward.
How do I apply for Certified Medical Assistant jobs at Duke University?
Apply directly through Duke Health's careers portal, where CMA openings are posted by clinic or department. Roles are often listed under ambulatory care or specialty practices. To filter specifically for positions open to visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which surfaces Duke University CMA postings alongside sponsorship eligibility details so you're not spending time on roles that won't support your immigration status.
Which visa types are commonly used for Certified Medical Assistant roles at Duke University?
Duke sponsors H-1B visas for CMA roles where the position qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards. Australian citizens may be sponsored through the E-3 visa, which requires a DOL-certified Labor Condition Application but has no lottery. For longer-term pathways, Duke supports EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa petitions, which involve PERM labor certification through the DOL before USCIS filing.
What qualifications does Duke University expect for Certified Medical Assistant positions?
Duke typically requires active CMA certification through AAMA or NCCT, or RMA certification through AMT. Most postings also expect clinical experience in phlebotomy, vital signs, and electronic health records systems. For international candidates, foreign credentials or training programs need to align with U.S. certification standards, and you should expect Duke's HR team to verify credential equivalency before moving to the visa sponsorship conversation.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a CMA role at Duke University?
Timeline depends on visa type. E-3 sponsorship typically moves fastest, with DOL LCA certification taking around seven business days and consular processing adding a few weeks. H-1B petitions at cap-exempt employers like Duke can be filed year-round, with USCIS standard processing taking three to six months. PERM-based Green Card pathways involve additional DOL recruitment and filing steps that can add a year or more before the immigrant petition stage.
