Target roles aligned with your degree
Clean Harbors hires OPT students most consistently in environmental science, chemical engineering, and health and safety roles. Match your degree field to the job posting's required qualifications precisely, since Clean Harbors's hiring managers evaluate OPT candidates against specialty occupation criteria from the start.
Verify Clean Harbors's E-Verify enrollment early
STEM OPT requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify before your 24-month extension is approved. Confirm Clean Harbors's enrollment status through E-Verify's employer search before accepting an offer, so your DSO can file the I-983 training plan without delays.
Time your application around OPT start date windows
You can apply for OPT up to 90 days before your program end date. Align your Clean Harbors application timeline so your EAD arrival and your intended start date match, since most hiring managers won't hold a role open past two to three weeks.
Use Migrate Mate to check Clean Harbors H-1B filing history
Before accepting an offer, research Clean Harbors's H-1B sponsorship track record by role and location on Migrate Mate. OPT is your authorization now, but knowing which job titles Clean Harbors has filed H-1B petitions for tells you whether a long-term path actually exists at this employer.
Prepare a STEM OPT training plan before your offer letter
Draft a detailed I-983 training plan outlining your learning objectives, supervision structure, and how the role connects to your STEM degree before finalizing your offer. Clean Harbors managers unfamiliar with STEM OPT paperwork respond better when you arrive with a draft rather than asking them to start from scratch.
Benchmark your salary against OFLC Wage Search data
Clean Harbors must pay STEM OPT employees wages comparable to U.S. workers in the same role. Look up the prevailing wage for your job title and location using OFLC Wage Search before negotiating, so you can confirm the offer meets the threshold and avoid a USCIS audit risk for your employer.
Clean Harbors OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Clean Harbors sponsor OPT visas?
Clean Harbors doesn't sponsor OPT directly, since OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to F-1 students, not a visa employers petition for. What Clean Harbors does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD, and the company is enrolled in E-Verify, which is required for employees seeking the 24-month STEM OPT extension.
Which departments at Clean Harbors typically hire OPT students?
Clean Harbors most frequently hires OPT students into environmental services, health and safety compliance, field operations, and technical consulting roles. These departments align with STEM-designated degree programs in environmental science, chemical engineering, and occupational health, making them the strongest targets for both initial OPT placement and STEM OPT extension eligibility.
How do I navigate the OPT hiring process at Clean Harbors?
Apply through Clean Harbors's careers portal and disclose your OPT status and EAD expiration date during the recruiter screening call. Bring your I-20, EAD, and a drafted I-983 training plan to the offer stage. If you're pursuing STEM OPT, confirm E-Verify enrollment with HR before signing and loop in your DSO immediately after receiving your offer letter.
Does Clean Harbors sponsor H-1B visas after OPT ends?
Clean Harbors has a documented history of sponsoring H-1B visas, particularly for employees in technical and consulting roles who demonstrate strong performance during their OPT period. You can research which specific job titles and office locations Clean Harbors has filed H-1B petitions for using Migrate Mate before committing to a role.
How do I know if my Clean Harbors role qualifies for STEM OPT extension?
Your degree must appear on the STEM Designated Degree Program List published by the Department of Homeland Security, and your job duties must directly relate to that degree. Cross-reference your job title with O*NET to confirm the role's standard degree requirement, then verify with your DSO that the match is strong enough to support the I-983 training plan.
How does Clean Harbors hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Clean Harbors can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Clean Harbors's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
