Align your degree to STEM-designated roles
Embry-Riddle's engineering, computer science, and aeronautics departments hire heavily from STEM fields that qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Confirm your degree's CIP code matches a STEM-designated program before applying so you can pitch yourself as a longer-term hire.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer
STEM OPT requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Embry-Riddle is a federal contractor and maintains E-Verify enrollment, but confirm this with HR before signing any offer letter, since your STEM extension authorization depends on it at the point of hire.
Target research and faculty support positions specifically
Embry-Riddle's research centers and flight simulation labs regularly bring on OPT students in research associate and technical support roles. These positions often sit within grant-funded projects where hiring managers have more flexibility to bring on international talent with existing work authorization.
Use Migrate Mate to map Embry-Riddle's visa filing history
Before your interview, search Embry-Riddle on Migrate Mate to review its H-1B filing history by department and role. This tells you which teams have sponsored international employees before and helps you frame the OPT-to-H-1B conversation with a specific hiring manager rather than a generic HR inquiry.
Prepare your I-983 training plan before the offer stage
For STEM OPT, your employer must sign the I-983 training plan before USCIS approves the extension. Draft a role-specific version tied to your actual job duties at Embry-Riddle so HR isn't surprised by the requirement and can review it quickly once an offer is extended.
Time your OPT start date around Embry-Riddle's hiring cycles
Embry-Riddle's academic hiring typically ramps up ahead of fall and spring semesters. Request your OPT start date to align with those cycles, giving yourself the longest possible runway on your EAD before the academic year's first major hiring window closes.
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University sponsor OPT visas?
Embry-Riddle doesn't sponsor OPT directly. OPT is work authorization that USCIS grants to eligible F-1 students. What Embry-Riddle does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. For STEM OPT, Embry-Riddle's E-Verify enrollment makes it eligible to sign the I-983 training plan required for the 24-month extension.
Which departments at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University typically hire OPT students?
Engineering, computer science, aeronautics, and research centers are the most active hiring areas for OPT students at Embry-Riddle. These departments frequently work with grant-funded projects and technical roles that align well with STEM-designated degree programs, making them natural fits for both initial OPT and the 24-month STEM extension.
How do I approach the OPT-to-H-1B transition when interviewing at Embry-Riddle?
Raise the H-1B question with the hiring manager, not just HR. Embry-Riddle has sponsored H-1B petitions for staff in technical and research roles. Use Migrate Mate to review its filing history by department so you can ask specifically whether the team you're joining has sponsored international employees before, which signals realistic intent.
How do I time my OPT application to match Embry-Riddle's hiring cycle?
USCIS recommends filing your OPT application up to 90 days before your program end date. Embry-Riddle's main hiring windows tend to align with academic semester starts, so target a start date that puts your EAD active in late July or early January to coincide with those cycles and give you maximum runway.
What should I prepare before asking Embry-Riddle to sign my I-983 training plan?
Draft the I-983 yourself before presenting it to HR. Map your specific job duties at Embry-Riddle to the learning objectives in the form. A ready-to-review document reduces HR hesitation, since many teams encounter the I-983 requirement for the first time with an OPT student and need guidance on what signing it actually involves.
How does Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
