Target GHD's project-based technical teams
GHD staffs most OPT hires into infrastructure, water, and environment project teams rather than corporate functions. Search for roles explicitly tied to engineering disciplines or sustainability consulting, where your degree field aligns directly with billable client work and OPT authorization is easiest to justify.
Confirm your role qualifies for STEM OPT
Not every GHD position falls under a STEM-designated CIP code. Cross-reference your degree program against your offered job title using O*NET before accepting an offer. A mismatch between your field of study and the role's SOC code can disqualify you from the 24-month STEM OPT extension.
Verify GHD's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm GHD's E-Verify participation through your DSO or HR contact before signing your offer letter. If the hiring entity is a subsidiary or joint venture, check that specific entity's enrollment status, not just GHD's parent organization.
Use Migrate Mate to research GHD's sponsorship history
Before applying, check GHD's visa filing history by role and location on Migrate Mate. This shows which job titles and offices have active sponsorship patterns, helping you target applications where OPT-to-H-1B transitions are most likely and avoid roles with no documented sponsorship track record.
Align your OPT start date with GHD's hiring cycle
GHD's consulting hiring typically follows project pipeline timelines, not fixed campus recruiting windows. Request your OPT EAD start date to align with a project onboarding period rather than your graduation date. USCIS allows you to apply up to 90 days before your program end date, giving you scheduling flexibility.
Clarify H-1B transition intent during offer negotiation
Raise H-1B sponsorship directly during the offer stage, not after you've started. Ask GHD's HR team whether your specific role and business unit have sponsored H-1B petitions for OPT conversions. Getting written confirmation of sponsorship eligibility before accepting protects you when the H-1B cap registration period opens.
GHD OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does GHD sponsor OPT visas?
GHD doesn't sponsor OPT directly. OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to F-1 students, not a visa employers petition for. What GHD does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD, and for STEM-designated roles, GHD participates in E-Verify to support the 24-month STEM OPT extension. You bring the authorization; GHD provides the qualifying employment.
Which departments at GHD typically hire OPT students?
GHD's engineering, environmental science, and water infrastructure teams see the most OPT hiring because those roles align closely with STEM-designated degree programs. Advisory and digital consulting roles can also qualify depending on your specific CIP code. Corporate functions like finance or HR are less likely to support STEM OPT extension eligibility.
How do I start the STEM OPT extension process at GHD?
Your DSO initiates the STEM OPT extension through SEVIS, but GHD's HR team must complete the employer portion of Form I-983 confirming the training plan. Start this process at least 90 days before your initial OPT EAD expires. USCIS recommends filing early since processing delays don't pause your work authorization if you file on time.
How do I know if GHD will sponsor my H-1B after OPT?
GHD has sponsored H-1B visas across engineering and consulting roles, but sponsorship decisions are made at the business unit level and depend on your role's business necessity. Use Migrate Mate to review GHD's historical H-1B visa filing patterns by office and job title before accepting your OPT offer, so you apply into a team with a documented sponsorship track record.
What timeline should I plan for OPT employment at GHD?
Your initial OPT period is 12 months. If your role qualifies for STEM OPT, you can extend by 24 months, giving you up to 36 months total with a single employer. GHD must be enrolled in E-Verify to support that extension. Plan your H-1B registration window carefully, as cap registration opens each March for an October 1 start date.
How does GHD hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. GHD can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check GHD's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
