Align your degree to the role
Education employers like Indiana University evaluate OPT hires closely for degree-to-role fit. Before applying, confirm your field of study maps directly to the job description. Use O*NET to identify the standard education requirements for your target occupation and cite that alignment explicitly in your cover letter.
Target research and IT departments first
Indiana University's research institutes, IT services, and academic technology teams hire OPT students most consistently. These units often have longer project timelines that justify supporting a STEM OPT extension and later H-1B sponsorship. Focus your search on departments with ongoing grant-funded or multi-year initiatives.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer
STEM OPT extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm Indiana University's enrollment status through E-Verify's employer search before your extension application is filed. Your DSO must receive a signed training plan from the employer, so loop them in as early as the offer stage.
Search Indiana University's LCA filings on Migrate Mate
Before your interview, search Indiana University's H-1B Labor Condition Application history on Migrate Mate. This shows the job titles, wage levels, and locations Indiana University has filed for, which helps you benchmark your salary expectations and identify which departments have a documented pattern of sponsoring international employees.
Prepare for the OPT-to-H-1B timing gap
If Indiana University offers H-1B sponsorship after your OPT period, USCIS registration opens in March for an October 1 start date. Your OPT EAD must cover you through that window. Work with your DSO to map your graduation date, OPT start, and STEM extension timeline against the H-1B filing calendar early.
Request a written sponsorship commitment in your offer
Universities sometimes issue offer letters that are silent on future visa sponsorship. Before signing, ask HR to confirm in writing whether Indiana University will support H-1B filing after your OPT period. A verbal commitment from a hiring manager is not binding; you need documentation from the international HR or legal team.
Indiana University OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Indiana University sponsor OPT visas?
Indiana University doesn't sponsor OPT itself. OPT is work authorization USCIS grants directly to F-1 students. What Indiana University does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. It is enrolled in E-Verify, which means it can also support the 24-month STEM OPT extension for eligible graduates working in qualifying roles.
Which departments at Indiana University typically hire OPT students?
Research institutes, IT and academic technology teams, administrative services, and university libraries are the most consistent areas. These units tend to have longer project cycles and more structured onboarding processes for international employees. STEM-designated roles in computer science, data science, and engineering-adjacent research positions are particularly well-suited for STEM OPT extension eligibility.
How do I approach the OPT hiring process at Indiana University?
Apply through Indiana University's official careers portal and indicate your OPT authorization in the work eligibility section. After receiving an offer, coordinate with both HR and your DSO to complete the I-983 training plan required for STEM OPT. Migrate Mate can help you review Indiana University's H-1B filing history to gauge long-term sponsorship likelihood before you accept.
How do I know if my role at Indiana University qualifies for STEM OPT extension?
Your role must be directly related to your STEM-designated degree program, and Indiana University must be enrolled in E-Verify. Cross-reference your job title against your degree's CIP code classification and confirm the match with your DSO. USCIS provides guidance on qualifying STEM degrees, and O*NET can help you verify whether your occupation aligns with your program.
Does Indiana University typically transition OPT employees to H-1B?
Indiana University does sponsor H-1B visas for staff and researchers, though sponsorship decisions are made at the departmental level rather than university-wide. Roles tied to ongoing research grants or specialized academic functions are more likely to receive H-1B support. Raise the question of long-term sponsorship directly with hiring managers and HR during the offer negotiation stage.
How does Indiana University hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Indiana University can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Indiana University's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
