Align your degree to JMT's project portfolio
JMT's core work spans transportation planning, structural engineering, and water resources. Tailor your resume to highlight coursework, capstone projects, or internships that map directly to these practice areas, since hiring managers screen for applied technical relevance, not just GPA.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
STEM OPT's 24-month extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Before signing an offer, verify JMT's enrollment status through E-Verify directly. A gap here means you'd be limited to the standard 12-month OPT period with no extension option.
Time your application around JMT's campus recruiting cycle
JMT recruits heavily at engineering university career fairs in the fall semester. Applying through those channels, rather than cold submitting online, positions you earlier in the hiring pipeline and gives you direct contact with technical recruiters who manage OPT onboarding decisions.
Research prevailing wage benchmarks before salary discussions
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up Level I and Level II wages for your target role and JMT's office location before any compensation conversation. Knowing the DOL wage floor helps you evaluate whether an offer is structured to support a future H-1B transition.
Map your OPT job title to an O*NET occupation code
JMT's engineering and planning roles must meet specialty occupation criteria for an eventual H-1B. Check your target job title against O*NET to confirm the role lists a bachelor's degree as a minimum requirement, which strengthens both your OPT employment record and any future H-1B petition.
Use Migrate Mate to track JMT's H-1B filing history
Your OPT period is your window to evaluate long-term sponsorship potential. Migrate Mate surfaces JMT's H-1B Labor Condition Application history by role and location, so you can verify which positions the company has filed for before committing to a team or office.
Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson sponsor OPT visas?
JMT hires F-1 students who already hold an OPT EAD issued by USCIS. The company doesn't file a petition for OPT itself since that authorization comes directly from USCIS to you. What matters is that JMT has an established track record of employing OPT students in engineering and planning roles and is enrolled in E-Verify, which is required for STEM OPT extensions.
Which departments at JMT typically hire OPT students?
JMT's transportation, structural engineering, water resources, and construction management divisions are the most active for OPT hires. These practice areas align closely with the civil and environmental engineering programs where OPT-eligible candidates are most concentrated. Roles in GIS, planning, and traffic engineering also see consistent OPT hiring across JMT's regional offices.
How do I start the OPT employment process at JMT?
Your DSO at your university authorizes your OPT by updating your I-20 and submitting the recommendation to USCIS, which issues your EAD. Once you have your EAD, JMT completes I-9 verification using your EAD and passport. You should apply to JMT positions no later than 90 days before your program end date to leave enough time for USCIS processing before your intended start date.
How do I know if JMT will sponsor my H-1B after OPT?
JMT has sponsored H-1B visas for engineering professionals, but sponsorship decisions are role-specific and not guaranteed. Use Migrate Mate to review JMT's Labor Condition Application history by job title and office location. That data shows which roles and teams have gone through the H-1B visa process before, giving you a concrete basis for the conversation with your manager during your OPT period.
What's the timeline for STEM OPT extension if I work at JMT?
You must file your STEM OPT extension application with USCIS no later than 90 days before your initial OPT EAD expires. Filing on time and while your original EAD is still valid gives you an automatic 180-day cap-gap extension while USCIS processes your case. JMT's E-Verify enrollment is required for the extension to be valid, so confirm that status early in your employment.
How does Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
