Align your degree to education roles
MCC's hiring in education skews toward candidates whose degree field directly matches the role, not just the industry. Map your transcript to the job description before applying, and be ready to explain the connection in your cover letter and interview.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT students need their employer enrolled in E-Verify to qualify for the 24-month extension. Ask MCC's HR team to confirm active E-Verify participation before you sign an offer, so your extension timeline isn't disrupted at the 12-month mark.
Target departments with recurring OPT hires
In education organizations, curriculum, instructional design, and academic operations teams tend to hire OPT students more consistently than administrative leadership roles. Focus your applications on those departments where degree-specific work is central to the job function.
Research MCC's H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate
OPT is your entry point, but H-1B sponsorship determines whether you can stay long-term. Use Migrate Mate to review MCC's H-1B filing history by role and see which positions have led to sponsorship in the past before accepting an offer.
Set your OPT timeline against MCC's hiring cycle
Education employers often align hiring with academic calendars. If your OPT end date falls mid-semester, flag this early in negotiations. You have a 60-day grace period after OPT expires, so give MCC's HR team enough lead time to plan your transition.
Prepare a prevailing wage benchmark before salary talks
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your role and location before discussing compensation. If MCC later sponsors your H-1B, your salary must meet the DOL wage level, so starting above that threshold avoids complications down the line.
MCC OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does MCC sponsor OPT visas?
MCC doesn't sponsor OPT directly, because OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to you as an F-1 student, not a benefit employers petition for. What MCC does is hire students who already hold a valid OPT EAD. If MCC is enrolled in E-Verify, it can also support STEM OPT students seeking the 24-month extension.
Which roles at MCC are most likely to hire OPT students?
In education organizations like MCC, roles in curriculum development, instructional design, academic operations, and educational technology tend to align best with OPT hiring. These positions typically require a specific degree field, which makes them a natural fit for F-1 students whose academic background matches the job directly.
How do I start the OPT process when I receive an offer from MCC?
Your DSO at your university initiates the OPT application through SEVIS, not MCC. Once USCIS approves your EAD and your start date arrives, you can begin working. MCC's HR team will complete Form I-9 to verify your work authorization. Notify your DSO as soon as you have an offer so there's no gap in your authorization timeline.
How long does it take for MCC to process an OPT hire?
MCC's internal onboarding timeline is separate from your OPT approval timeline with USCIS. USCIS typically takes several weeks to process an OPT EAD application, so apply at least 90 days before your intended start date. Coordinate with both your DSO and MCC's HR team to make sure your EAD arrives before your first day.
How do I find out if MCC has sponsored H-1B visas for former OPT employees?
Migrate Mate compiles DOL Labor Condition Application data that shows which employers have filed H-1B visa petitions and for which job titles. Searching MCC on Migrate Mate gives you a clearer picture of whether roles similar to yours have led to long-term sponsorship, which helps you evaluate the offer beyond just the OPT period.
How does MCC hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. MCC can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check MCC's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
