INTRODUCTION

The ideal candidate has a master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program, current Texas licensure and national certification, and required life support certifications, with preferred experience in orthopaedic surgery or oncology and comfort managing complex surgical oncology patients across outpatient, inpatient, and on-call settings.
This position is part time and not benefit eligible, scheduled for 19 hours per week with day and evening shifts and weekend on-call coverage as assigned. The salary range is Minimum $117,500.00 - Midpoint $146,500.00 - Maximum $176,500.00

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Outpatient Orthopaedic Oncology Patient Care
- Complete history and physical examinations for patients with general musculoskeletal diagnoses and primary or metastatic bone and soft tissue tumors
- Perform preoperative history and physicals and submit consultation requests for medical preoperative evaluations
- Conduct postoperative examinations and manage postoperative complications
- Review diagnostic imaging and laboratory studies and develop differential diagnoses and treatment plans
- Dictate prompt PME, history and physicals, and preoperative and postoperative notes
- Dictate all telephone patient communications and document encounters accurately
- Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, cancer treatment importance, and tumor surveillance
- Present patient case histories and imaging at multidisciplinary conferences and dictate recommendations
- Submit billing within 24 to 48 hours of patient encounters
- Communicate with allied care providers and referring physicians to support ongoing outpatient care
- Assist business centers with insurance authorization by providing clinical information and completing peer-to-peer discussions
- Perform outpatient orthopaedic procedures within scope of practice
Surgical Management of Orthopaedic Oncology Patients
- Manage faculty surgical schedules and coordinate surgical case scheduling
- Communicate with multiple surgical services to coordinate complex multi-surgeon cases
- Coordinate with Bone and Tissue Bank representatives for procurement of allografts
- Contact medical device representatives to secure prostheses, instruments, and required surgical equipment
- First and second assist in surgical procedures
- Submit preoperative and postoperative orders
- Communicate with operating room, internal medicine, and anesthesiology teams to coordinate complex surgical care
On-Call and Acute Care Responsibilities
- Provide inpatient and ACCC after-hours coverage while on call
- Manage medical care of postoperative patients during on-call periods
- Evaluate and manage urgent and emergent orthopaedic oncology issues in inpatient and ACCC settings
- Cover inpatient consults for urgent or emergent orthopaedic problems and implement appropriate surgical or non-surgical management
- Communicate with MERIT team, ICU staff, and on-call consultants for emergent medical situations
- Perform acute care assessments and order appropriate diagnostics, consultations, and interventions
- Cover the operating room after hours and on weekends, with weekend call from Friday through Sunday
Other Duties
- Perform additional duties as assigned in support of departmental operations
Education
Master's Degree Accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), except for Physician Assistants who graduated from a PA program prior to 2013.
