Target departments with recurring OPT hires
NSU's health professions, computer science, and research administration departments hire OPT students most consistently. Apply directly to those units rather than submitting a general application, and tailor your materials to each department's active research or clinical programs.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT's 24-month extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Ask NSU's HR team to confirm enrollment status before you sign an offer, so your extension eligibility isn't disrupted after you start.
Align your OPT start date with NSU's hiring cycles
NSU follows academic hiring calendars, with most roles posted in spring and late summer. Time your USCIS OPT application so your EAD start date lands within those windows, avoiding gaps between graduation and your first day of authorized work.
Frame your degree field on every application
OPT authorization is tied to your degree's field of study. For education-sector roles at NSU, explicitly connect your degree to the job description in your cover letter, making it straightforward for hiring managers to confirm your work authorization is valid for that position.
Use Migrate Mate to map NSU's H-1B filing history
If you're planning beyond OPT, use Migrate Mate to review NSU's H-1B filing history by role and department. That data shows which positions have transitioned to H-1B before, helping you target roles with a realistic sponsorship path after your OPT period ends.
Prepare your I-983 training plan before your offer closes
For STEM OPT, NSU must co-sign your I-983 training plan before USCIS approves the extension. Draft your training objectives aligned to your specific role and share them with your supervisor during the offer stage, so the sign-off doesn't delay your extension filing.
Nova Southeastern University OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Nova Southeastern University sponsor OPT visas?
NSU doesn't sponsor OPT directly. OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to F-1 students independently of the employer. What NSU does is hire students who already hold a valid OPT EAD. For STEM OPT extensions, NSU must be enrolled in E-Verify and co-sign your I-983 training plan, which makes their E-Verify status worth confirming early.
Which roles and departments at NSU typically hire OPT students?
Health professions, information technology, research administration, and academic support roles at NSU see the most OPT hires. Graduate-level research positions and clinical program support roles are particularly active, especially in NSU's health science colleges. Administrative and data-focused roles in enrollment and student services also regularly bring on OPT students.
How do I confirm NSU supports the STEM OPT extension?
Ask NSU's HR or the hiring department directly whether the university is enrolled in E-Verify before you accept an offer. E-Verify enrollment is a USCIS requirement for any employer co-signing a STEM OPT I-983 training plan. Without it, your 24-month extension won't be approved regardless of how well-matched the role is.
What is the timeline for starting work at NSU on OPT?
USCIS recommends filing your OPT application up to 90 days before your program end date, and processing typically takes several months. You can start work on or after your EAD start date, not before. Coordinate your NSU offer timeline with your DSO early so your EAD arrival aligns with your expected start date.
How do I find open OPT roles at NSU and assess sponsorship prospects?
Search NSU's careers portal filtering for roles that match your degree field, and cross-reference with Migrate Mate to see which departments have historically supported visa transitions. Roles in departments with H-1B filing history are stronger bets for long-term sponsorship, giving you a clearer picture of life beyond your OPT authorization period.
How does Nova Southeastern University hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Nova Southeastern University can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Nova Southeastern University's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
