Align your degree to ODU's research priorities
Old Dominion University centers hiring around its research institutes in engineering, data science, health sciences, and education. Map your degree field to active ODU research centers before applying, hiring managers in academic settings weigh disciplinary fit more heavily than in the private sector.
Confirm ODU's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT's 24-month extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Verify ODU's active enrollment status directly with the HR or international hiring office before signing an offer, since enrollment lapses can invalidate your extension eligibility on day one.
Target OPT-friendly departments in IT and research
ODU's IT services, institutional research, and grant-funded labs hire OPT students more consistently than administrative offices. Focus your applications on roles tied to externally funded projects, where supervisors have more flexibility to onboard international talent and understand work authorization requirements.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified ODU sponsorship data
Before applying, check ODU's H-1B and visa filing history by role using Migrate Mate. Seeing which job titles ODU has sponsored previously helps you prioritize applications to departments with an established track record of supporting international employees through the OPT-to-H-1B transition.
Prepare your Training Plan before the offer stage
For STEM OPT, you'll need a signed Form I-983 Training Plan from your supervisor before USCIS will approve the extension. Draft a proposed training plan outlining goals and supervision structure before your final interview so ODU's HR team isn't encountering the document for the first time at onboarding.
Benchmark salary offers against OFLC Wage Search data
Universities sometimes offer below-market salaries for entry-level roles. Look up the prevailing wage for your job title and location using the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating. If ODU later sponsors your H-1B, your salary must meet the DOL prevailing wage threshold for that occupation.
Old Dominion University OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Old Dominion University sponsor OPT visas?
Old Dominion University doesn't sponsor OPT directly. OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to eligible F-1 students, not something employers file for. ODU hires students who already hold an OPT EAD, and for STEM OPT extensions, ODU must be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm that enrollment with ODU's HR or international office before accepting an offer.
Which roles at Old Dominion University are most accessible for OPT students?
OPT students at ODU most commonly land in research assistant, data analyst, IT support, and academic program coordinator roles. Departments tied to grant-funded research or STEM-designated programs tend to be more familiar with OPT requirements. Roles in ODU's engineering, computer science, and health sciences divisions are worth prioritizing in your search.
How do I navigate the OPT onboarding process at Old Dominion University?
Once you receive an offer, you'll work with ODU's HR team to complete I-9 verification using your EAD. For STEM OPT, coordinate with your DSO to update your SEVIS record and submit Form I-983 with your supervisor's signature. Start that process immediately after signing the offer, since delays can affect your STEM OPT extension approval timeline.
How do I know if Old Dominion University will support an H-1B after my OPT ends?
Migrate Mate lets you review ODU's historical H-1B visa filing activity by job title and department, so you can see which roles have a track record of leading to H-1B sponsorship. Raise the question of long-term sponsorship intent during the offer stage, since not all departments have experience or budget for the H-1B petition process.
What is the typical timeline for OPT students starting at Old Dominion University?
Your OPT EAD must already be approved before your ODU start date. Standard OPT processing through USCIS can take several months, so file as early as your DSO allows. For STEM OPT extensions, you have until the end of your initial OPT period to apply, but filing early avoids gaps in authorization while USCIS adjudicates the extension.
How does Old Dominion University hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Old Dominion University can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Old Dominion University's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
