Align your degree to education roles
Otterbein hires OPT students in roles tied to instruction, student services, and institutional research. Map your degree field to open positions in those departments specifically. A mismatch between your academic background and the posted role makes OPT authorization harder to justify during onboarding paperwork.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT's 24-month extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Ask Otterbein's HR department directly whether they're enrolled before you sign an offer. Universities sometimes operate multiple legal entities, and enrollment status can vary by campus or department.
Search verified OPT employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter education-sector employers that actively hire OPT students and have a track record of H-1B sponsorship. This lets you target Otterbein alongside comparable institutions and evaluate which roles are most likely to transition into long-term visa support after your OPT period ends.
Request your I-20 OPT endorsement early
Your DSO must recommend OPT on your I-20 before USCIS processes your EAD application. File with USCIS up to 90 days before your program end date. Delays at the DSO level, not USCIS, are the most common reason students miss their start date at employers like Otterbein.
Target departments with recurring international hires
Otterbein's international student office, global programs division, and research departments tend to have the most familiarity with OPT work authorization. Applying to roles in these units means HR and the hiring manager already understand your EAD and won't need to be educated on the authorization during the offer process.
Prepare your training plan for STEM OPT
If your degree qualifies for STEM OPT, Otterbein must co-sign a formal training plan on Form I-983 that connects your role to your field of study. Draft a proposed learning objective tied to your specific job duties before your offer conversation so HR isn't starting from scratch.
Otterbein University OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Otterbein University sponsor OPT visas?
Otterbein University doesn't sponsor OPT directly. OPT work authorization comes from USCIS and is granted to you as an F-1 student, not filed by the employer. What Otterbein does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD, and it has a history of supporting the transition to H-1B sponsorship for qualifying employees after OPT ends.
Which departments at Otterbein University typically hire OPT students?
Otterbein most commonly brings on OPT students in academic support, student affairs, institutional research, and global programs. These departments have recurring contact with international students and tend to have HR staff familiar with EAD-based work authorization. Roles in STEM-adjacent fields may also qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension if Otterbein is enrolled in E-Verify.
How do I find open OPT-eligible roles at Otterbein University?
Start by searching Otterbein's careers page and filtering for roles that match your degree field, since OPT authorization must connect to your area of study. You can also use Migrate Mate to identify education-sector employers with OPT hiring history and compare Otterbein against similar institutions to assess your best opportunities.
How do I time my OPT application when targeting Otterbein University?
USCIS recommends filing your OPT EAD application at least 90 days before your program end date, and your DSO must authorize the OPT recommendation on your I-20 before you file. Standard USCIS processing can take several weeks, so coordinate your job search timeline at Otterbein around your expected EAD receipt date to avoid gaps.
Does Otterbein University sponsor H-1B visas after OPT ends?
Otterbein University has sponsored H-1B visas for employees, making it a viable long-term employer for F-1 graduates. H-1B sponsorship is separate from OPT and requires the employer to file a petition with USCIS on your behalf. Roles most likely to lead to H-1B sponsorship are those tied to specialty occupations requiring a relevant bachelor's degree or higher.
How does Otterbein University hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Otterbein University can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Otterbein University's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
