Target research and informatics roles first
Penn Medicine's clinical research coordinators, biostatisticians, and health informatics analysts are the roles most consistently filled by OPT students. Apply to departments within the University of Pennsylvania Health System rather than standalone clinical units, which hire less frequently on OPT.
Verify your EAD is ready before applying
Penn Medicine's HR onboarding requires your EAD card in hand before your start date, not just a receipt notice. Apply to USCIS at least 90 days before your program end date so your card arrives before your offer deadline.
Confirm Penn Medicine's E-Verify enrollment early
To qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify. Penn Medicine is enrolled, but confirm this directly with your hiring manager before accepting an offer, since affiliate entities may operate under different EINs.
Use Migrate Mate to identify roles with H-1B history
OPT is temporary, so target Penn Medicine roles that have previously led to H-1B sponsorship. Migrate Mate surfaces Penn Medicine's DOL Labor Condition Application filing history by job title, showing which roles have a real H-1B sponsorship track record.
Align your degree field to your target role explicitly
Penn Medicine hiring managers reviewing OPT candidates look for a direct match between your degree field and the job description. Use O*NET to pull the standard occupational requirements for your target role and mirror that language in your resume and cover letter.
Start H-1B transition conversations at six months
Penn Medicine's immigration process involves both internal HR and outside counsel, so raise H-1B sponsorship with your manager at least six months before your OPT expires. This gives the legal team time to file before the annual H-1B cap registration window opens in March.
Penn Medicine OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Penn Medicine sponsor OPT visas?
Penn Medicine doesn't sponsor OPT directly, because OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to you as an F-1 student, not a visa your employer files for. What Penn Medicine does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD, and it has a consistent history of supporting those employees through the subsequent H-1B sponsorship process.
Which departments at Penn Medicine hire OPT students most often?
Clinical research, health informatics, biostatistics, and data analytics teams within the University of Pennsylvania Health System hire OPT students most frequently. Administrative and population health roles also recruit OPT candidates, particularly for candidates with degrees in public health, applied data science, or health administration.
How do I confirm Penn Medicine will support my STEM OPT extension?
Confirm that the specific Penn Medicine entity on your offer letter is enrolled in E-Verify, since affiliated hospitals or subsidiaries may operate under separate employer identification numbers. Your DSO then files the STEM OPT extension recommendation through SEVIS, and USCIS issues the updated EAD. Start this process at least 90 days before your initial OPT expires.
How do I find Penn Medicine OPT jobs that lead to H-1B sponsorship?
Migrate Mate shows Penn Medicine's historical H-1B and E-3 visa Labor Condition Application filings by job title, so you can identify which roles the organization has actually sponsored, rather than guessing based on job descriptions. Prioritize applying to those titles if your goal is long-term status beyond OPT.
What is the timeline for transitioning from OPT to H-1B at Penn Medicine?
Penn Medicine typically begins the H-1B process roughly six months before an employee's OPT expires. H-1B cap registration opens each March for an October 1 start date, so your manager and Penn Medicine's immigration counsel need to be aligned well before that window. If you're selected in the lottery, your status continues without a gap.
How does Penn Medicine hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Penn Medicine can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Penn Medicine's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
