Align your degree to Colorado licensing requirements
Colorado teacher licensing requires a degree in your subject area, not just education broadly. Pull the O*NET occupation profile for your target role and confirm your degree field maps to the state-endorsed endorsement area before applying to Poudre School District positions.
Verify Poudre's E-Verify enrollment before your end date
STEM OPT's 24-month extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm Poudre School District's active enrollment status through E-Verify before accepting an offer, so your extension application to USCIS isn't jeopardized by an enrollment gap.
Target roles with year-round district contracts
School districts hire on academic-year cycles, but OPT authorization runs continuously. Pursue roles with 12-month contracts, like instructional coaches, curriculum coordinators, or special education specialists, which avoid gaps between your OPT end date and a future H-1B start.
Request your H-1B sponsorship conversation early
Public school districts move slowly on employer-sponsored visas. Raise the H-1B transition question during offer negotiations, not after you've started. Poudre's HR team needs lead time to engage legal counsel and budget for I-129 filing fees before your OPT expires.
Use Migrate Mate to find Poudre's full filing history
Search Migrate Mate to see which visa types Poudre School District has filed for historically and which job titles appear most often. That data tells you which departments have cleared the sponsorship process before, so you can target roles with a proven track record.
Check prevailing wage against district pay scales
Before your employer files an H-1B petition, DOL requires the offered salary to meet the prevailing wage for your occupation and location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the wage level for your role in the Fort Collins area and compare it to published Poudre salary schedules.
Poudre School District OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Poudre School District sponsor OPT visas?
Poudre School District doesn't sponsor OPT itself. OPT is work authorization USCIS grants directly to you as an F-1 student. What Poudre does is hire OPT students who already hold a valid EAD. If your OPT is STEM-eligible, Poudre also needs to be enrolled in E-Verify to support your 24-month extension application.
Which roles at Poudre School District are most accessible for OPT students?
Roles requiring specialized degrees, such as special education teacher, school psychologist, instructional technology coordinator, and bilingual education specialist, tend to align well with OPT because the degree-to-job match is direct and documentable. Administrative and curriculum roles are also viable for graduates with education administration or policy backgrounds.
How do I start the OPT hiring process at Poudre School District?
Apply through Poudre's standard hiring portal with your current EAD and I-20 ready. During onboarding, you'll complete an I-9 where you present your EAD as your work authorization document. Poudre's HR team processes your employment eligibility through E-Verify, which is also the mechanism that supports a future STEM OPT extension.
How do I know if Poudre School District has sponsored H-1B visas for past OPT employees?
Migrate Mate aggregates DOL Labor Condition Application data by employer, so you can see which visa categories and job titles Poudre School District has filed for historically. Reviewing that filing history before your interview helps you assess whether your specific role and department have a track record of H-1B sponsorship.
What timeline should I plan for the OPT-to-H-1B transition at a school district?
H-1B cap-subject petitions must be filed in April for an October 1 start date. School districts operate on academic-year budgets, which means Poudre's HR and legal teams need several months of lead time. Start the H-1B conversation no later than the fall semester before your OPT expires to give Poudre enough runway to prepare the petition.
How does Poudre School District hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Poudre School District can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Poudre School District's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
