Align your credentials to Arizona teaching standards
Arizona requires state certification for classroom teaching roles, so verify your foreign degree meets the Arizona Department of Education's equivalency criteria before applying. An unofficial transcript evaluation won't suffice for credentialed positions, and delays here can compress your OPT timeline significantly.
Target support roles when certification is pending
Instructional aide, education specialist, and curriculum coordinator roles at SUSD don't require Arizona teaching certification and regularly hire OPT students. These positions let you build district experience while pursuing licensure, making you a stronger H-1B sponsorship candidate in a subsequent hiring cycle.
Verify SUSD's E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer
STEM OPT's 24-month extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm SUSD's active enrollment status directly with HR before signing, since enrollment gaps at large districts can occur. USCIS won't approve your STEM extension if the employer isn't properly enrolled at the time of filing.
Research SUSD's H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate
Before your OPT clock runs out, use Migrate Mate to review SUSD's H-1B Labor Condition Application history by occupation. Seeing which job titles the district has historically sponsored tells you exactly which roles to pursue for a long-term sponsorship path after OPT.
Negotiate your start date around your EAD card arrival
OPT authorization doesn't begin until your EAD card arrives, regardless of the requested start date on your I-765. Education employers like SUSD typically need firm start dates for classroom coverage planning, so build a two-to-four week buffer between your EAD expected delivery and your proposed first day.
Use the OFLC Wage Search to set salary expectations
Public school districts publish salary schedules, but those schedules may not match DOL prevailing wage requirements for your role level. Cross-check your target position against the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating, so you can confirm SUSD's offer meets the prevailing wage threshold required for any future H-1B transition.
Scottsdale Unified School District OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Scottsdale Unified School District sponsor OPT visas?
SUSD doesn't sponsor OPT directly, since OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to F-1 students, not something employers file for. What SUSD does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD, and the district has demonstrated willingness to employ international candidates across instructional and administrative roles, including supporting the transition to H-1B sponsorship for qualifying employees.
Which roles at Scottsdale Unified School District typically hire OPT students?
OPT students most commonly land roles in instructional support, curriculum development, special education services, and district-level administration at SUSD. Credentialed teaching positions require Arizona state certification, which can be a barrier for recent graduates. Candidates without Arizona licensure often enter through specialist or coordinator roles and pursue certification concurrently during their OPT period.
How do I confirm SUSD will support my STEM OPT extension?
Ask SUSD's HR department directly whether the district is enrolled in E-Verify, since STEM OPT extensions require active enrollment at the time of your I-765 filing. Your DSO also needs to update your SEVIS record with a formal training plan. USCIS reviews both the E-Verify enrollment and the training plan before approving the 24-month extension.
How do I find out if SUSD has sponsored H-1B visas for education roles?
Migrate Mate's employer search lets you review SUSD's Labor Condition Application filing history filtered by occupation code, showing which roles the district has historically sponsored for H-1B. This matters if you're using OPT as a bridge to long-term sponsorship, since not every district role qualifies as a specialty occupation under H-1B requirements.
What is the typical timeline for moving from OPT to H-1B at a school district like SUSD?
USCIS opens H-1B registration in early March for an October 1 start date. If your OPT expires before October 1, the cap-gap rule extends your work authorization automatically while your petition is pending. School districts follow the academic calendar, so aligning your H-1B start date with the fall semester typically works in your favor for employment continuity.
How does Scottsdale Unified School District hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Scottsdale Unified School District can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Scottsdale Unified School District's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
