Align your degree to SGH's technical disciplines
SGH hires OPT students for roles tied directly to their degree field, so a mismatch between your major and the posted role creates an immediate screening problem. Map your coursework to the job description before applying, especially for structural, geotechnical, or building enclosure positions.
Verify your STEM OPT eligibility before interviewing
If your degree qualifies for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, confirm your program is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List before your first interview. SGH's engineering roles frequently fall under STEM-eligible classifications, and arriving informed about your own extension timeline strengthens your candidacy.
Document your OPT end date in every application
SGH's hiring teams need to know how much authorized work time you have remaining before an H-1B transition would be required. Include your OPT EAD end date in your application materials and address the timeline proactively in your cover letter rather than waiting for the recruiter to ask.
Search SGH's verified OPT hiring history on Migrate Mate
Before applying, use Migrate Mate to review SGH's documented hiring patterns for F-1 OPT students across engineering and consulting disciplines. This helps you target roles where OPT candidates have historically been placed, rather than applying broadly and hoping for the best.
Confirm SGH's E-Verify enrollment before STEM extension
The 24-month STEM OPT extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Ask your recruiter or HR contact at SGH to confirm active E-Verify enrollment during the offer stage, before your DSO submits the STEM OPT extension recommendation to USCIS.
Prepare for the H-1B transition conversation at offer
SGH sponsors H-1B visas, so raise the OPT-to-H-1B pathway directly during salary negotiations. Ask which practice groups have completed this transition most recently and whether the firm covers H-1B filing fees, so you understand what post-OPT sponsorship actually looks like at the firm before you sign.
Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. sponsor OPT visas?
SGH doesn't sponsor OPT itself, because OPT is work authorization USCIS grants directly to F-1 students, not an employer-filed visa. What SGH does is hire students who already hold a valid OPT EAD. The firm has a documented history of bringing on F-1 OPT candidates across its engineering and consulting practices, particularly in technical roles aligned with STEM-eligible degree fields.
Which roles at SGH typically hire OPT students?
SGH's strongest OPT hiring is concentrated in its structural engineering, geotechnical, and building technology groups, where candidates with degrees in civil, structural, or mechanical engineering are routinely placed. Project analyst and technical consulting roles also bring in OPT candidates, especially at the associate and entry-level tiers where degree-to-role alignment is straightforward to document.
How do I approach the OPT timeline with SGH's recruiters?
Raise your OPT EAD end date early in the process rather than waiting for HR to ask. If you're eligible for the STEM OPT extension, note that upfront and confirm SGH's E-Verify enrollment, which is required for the extension to proceed. Migrate Mate can help you understand SGH's historical H-1B visa sponsorship patterns so you know what a long-term path at the firm looks like before you commit.
Does SGH support the transition from OPT to H-1B?
SGH sponsors H-1B visas, and employees who join on OPT are among the candidates the firm has transitioned to H-1B status. The H-1B requires a separate employer petition filed through USCIS and is subject to the annual lottery. Starting the conversation about sponsorship intent during your offer negotiation gives you the clearest picture of whether a long-term path exists at SGH.
How do I know if my OPT job at SGH qualifies for the STEM extension?
The STEM OPT extension depends on two factors: your degree must appear on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List, and your role at SGH must be directly related to that degree field. Most engineering and applied science positions at SGH satisfy the job-degree relationship requirement. Your DSO makes the final determination and submits the STEM OPT recommendation to USCIS once both conditions are confirmed.
How does Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc.'s individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
