Target STEM-designated roles for extension eligibility
SUNY Downstate's research and health sciences positions frequently fall under STEM-designated CIP codes, making you eligible for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Confirm the SOC code for any role matches your degree field before applying to avoid losing extension eligibility.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer
STEM OPT extensions require your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Public universities like SUNY Downstate typically maintain E-Verify enrollment for federal funding compliance, but confirm this with HR before your OPT start date to protect your authorization timeline.
Align your degree field with the department's open roles
SUNY Downstate hires across biomedical sciences, public health, healthcare administration, and clinical research. Match your degree's CIP code to the specific department's role description, a mismatch between your field of study and the job title is the most common OPT hiring complication at academic medical centers.
Use Migrate Mate to identify SUNY Downstate's H-1B filing history
OPT is a bridge, not a destination. Use Migrate Mate to review SUNY Downstate's H-1B sponsorship track record by occupation so you can assess whether the role you're targeting has a realistic path to long-term status after your OPT period ends.
Submit your I-983 training plan before your OPT start date
For STEM OPT, SUNY Downstate's HR or research administration team must co-sign your I-983 training plan. Initiate this conversation at least 90 days before your current OPT EAD expires so USCIS processing doesn't create a gap in your work authorization.
Research prevailing wage benchmarks for your target role
Academic medical centers set salaries by job band, not by negotiation. Look up your occupation's wage level on the OFLC Wage Search and cross-reference it with Bureau of Labor Statistics data so you enter salary discussions knowing whether the offer meets the federal prevailing wage threshold for future H-1B eligibility.
SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University sponsor OPT visas?
SUNY Downstate doesn't sponsor OPT, OPT is work authorization issued directly to you by USCIS, not a petition filed by the employer. What SUNY Downstate does is hire F-1 students who already hold an OPT EAD and, for STEM OPT extensions, provide the required I-983 training plan and E-Verify participation needed to extend your authorization.
Which departments at SUNY Downstate typically hire OPT students?
OPT students at SUNY Downstate most commonly work in biomedical research labs, public health programs, clinical research coordination, and healthcare administration. Departments tied to its School of Public Health, College of Medicine research divisions, and affiliated hospital units tend to have the strongest track record of hiring and retaining F-1 graduates through the OPT period.
How do I navigate the STEM OPT extension process at SUNY Downstate?
Start by confirming your role's SOC code qualifies under a STEM-designated CIP code and that SUNY Downstate is enrolled in E-Verify. Then work with your DSO to file the STEM OPT extension application with USCIS at least 90 days before your OPT EAD expires. SUNY Downstate HR must co-sign your I-983 training plan before you submit.
What is the timeline for transitioning from OPT to H-1B at SUNY Downstate?
If SUNY Downstate decides to sponsor your H-1B visa, the process typically begins in January or February ahead of the April 1 cap-subject filing window, with an October 1 start date if selected. Use Migrate Mate to review SUNY Downstate's historical H-1B visa filing activity by role type so you can have an informed conversation with HR about sponsorship timing well before your OPT expires.
How do I position myself as a strong OPT candidate at SUNY Downstate?
Align your degree's CIP code directly with the role's SOC code and highlight any prior clinical, research, or public health experience in your application. Academic medical centers prioritize candidates who can demonstrate immediate contribution to ongoing research or patient-support workflows, so tailor your materials to the specific department's active projects rather than submitting a generic application.
How does SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending.
