Target UTMB's research and clinical departments
UTMB's strongest OPT hiring tends to concentrate in biomedical research labs, clinical research coordination, and public health programs. When applying, filter for roles under these divisions specifically, since hiring managers there are most familiar with OPT employment authorization timelines.
Confirm UTMB's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Before signing an offer, ask UTMB's HR department to confirm active enrollment. Without it, you can't file the 24-month STEM extension with USCIS, regardless of how qualified you are.
Align your EAD end date with UTMB's onboarding schedule
UTMB's academic medical environment means onboarding can run four to six weeks. Request your official start date in writing and verify it falls within your EAD validity window. Starting even one day before your EAD is active creates unauthorized employment issues.
Use Migrate Mate to identify UTMB's H-1B filing history
Before committing to UTMB for your OPT year, check whether they've consistently filed H-1B petitions for roles matching your field. Migrate Mate surfaces UTMB's DOL Labor Condition Application data by occupation, so you can evaluate your post-OPT sponsorship path before accepting an offer.
Document your specialty occupation connection upfront
UTMB HR will verify that your role requires a degree in a directly related field for I-9 and STEM OPT purposes. Pull your job description and map it to your degree field before your start date using O*NET to preempt any documentation requests during onboarding.
Initiate H-1B conversations with your manager early
UTMB processes H-1B petitions through institutional channels that can take several months to initiate. Raise H-1B sponsorship with your direct manager and HR contact no later than 12 months before your OPT expires, so internal approvals don't compress your filing window.
The University of Texas Medical Branch OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does The University of Texas Medical Branch sponsor OPT visas?
UTMB doesn't sponsor OPT directly. OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to you as the F-1 student, not a petition filed by the employer. UTMB hires students who already hold an OPT EAD. For STEM OPT extensions, UTMB must be enrolled in E-Verify, and you file the extension through USCIS with support from your DSO.
Which departments at UTMB are most likely to hire OPT students?
UTMB's most OPT-accessible roles tend to sit in biomedical research, clinical research coordination, public health, health informatics, and healthcare administration. Graduate programs within the School of Health Professions and Institute for Human Infections and Immunity frequently produce roles that align with OPT-eligible degree fields.
How do I start the STEM OPT extension process at UTMB?
You initiate the STEM OPT extension with your DSO at least 90 days before your initial OPT expires. UTMB HR must provide a completed Form I-983 training plan and confirm E-Verify enrollment. USCIS processes the extension, not UTMB. Submit your application before your current EAD expires to maintain employment authorization continuity.
Does UTMB support the transition from OPT to H-1B?
UTMB does sponsor H-1B visas for employees in qualifying roles, and many OPT hires pursue this path. The timeline is critical: H-1B cap-subject petitions must be filed in April for an October 1 start date. Use Migrate Mate to review UTMB's historical H-1B LCA filings by occupation to assess sponsorship likelihood in your specific field.
How do I make my OPT application stand out for UTMB roles?
Position your degree field as a direct match to the posted job requirements, not just a related area. UTMB's academic medical setting means hiring managers evaluate specialty occupation fit carefully. Reference your thesis, clinical rotations, or research projects that align with the department's active grants or clinical trials to demonstrate clear disciplinary relevance.
How does The University of Texas Medical Branch hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. The University of Texas Medical Branch can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check The University of Texas Medical Branch's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
