Target departments with research or faculty needs
Touro's academic and research departments hire OPT students more consistently than purely administrative units. Focus your applications on roles tied to instruction, research coordination, or curriculum development, where project-based work aligns naturally with OPT's 12-month authorization window.
Verify Touro's E-Verify enrollment before accepting
STEM OPT extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm Touro University's E-Verify status through USCIS before signing an offer, since losing those 24 extra months can significantly compress your timeline for transitioning to H-1B sponsorship.
Align your degree field to your job title precisely
USCIS requires that your OPT employment be directly related to your major. At an institution like Touro, roles in education administration or research are straightforward matches, but roles in IT or operations need a documented connection to your degree field before your start date.
Raise H-1B sponsorship in the offer negotiation
Education employers sometimes overlook long-term visa planning unless you surface it early. Ask Touro's HR team directly whether they have a track record of sponsoring H-1B for OPT hires, and clarify their timeline relative to the annual H-1B registration window in March.
Benchmark your salary against OFLC Wage Search data
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up prevailing wage levels for your specific role and location before negotiating. Underpaying OPT hires relative to prevailing wage can create complications when Touro later files for H-1B or Green Card sponsorship on your behalf.
Search Migrate Mate to find Touro's verified sponsorship history
Pull up Touro University on Migrate Mate to see which visa types they've sponsored and which job categories those filings covered. That data tells you which departments have actually gone through the sponsorship process, so you can prioritize roles with a real conversion track record.
Touro University OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Touro University sponsor OPT visas?
Touro University doesn't sponsor OPT directly, since OPT is work authorization USCIS grants to F-1 students, not something employers petition for. What Touro does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. If Touro is enrolled in E-Verify, STEM OPT students can also request a 24-month extension while employed there.
Which roles at Touro University are most likely to hire OPT students?
Touro most commonly hires OPT students in academic support, research coordination, instructional design, and administrative roles tied to its health sciences and liberal arts programs. Roles that have a clear educational or research function tend to offer the strongest degree-field alignment required for OPT eligibility under USCIS guidelines.
How do I confirm my OPT job at Touro qualifies under my degree field?
Your DSO at your university, not Touro, makes the official determination, but you can prepare by documenting how your daily responsibilities connect to your major. Use O*NET to pull the standard tasks for your job title and cross-reference them with your degree program's learning outcomes before your start date.
What is the typical timeline for transitioning from OPT to H-1B at Touro University?
H-1B visa registration opens each March for an October 1 start date. If you're hired by Touro on OPT and both sides want to transition, Touro would need to register you in the lottery by March and file the full petition if selected. Standard OPT gives you 12 months, so timing relative to your graduation date matters significantly.
How do I find out if Touro University has sponsored work visas for roles similar to mine?
Migrate Mate shows verified visa filing history by employer, including which job categories Touro has sponsored and under which visa types. Reviewing that data before you apply helps you target the departments with a proven sponsorship track record, rather than applying broadly and discovering limitations after an offer is on the table.
How does Touro University hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Touro University can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Touro University's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
