Align your degree field to open roles
University of Nevada, Reno hires OPT students in fields directly tied to their research and academic programs. Cross-check your degree against the job's listed qualifications before applying, since mismatched fields can complicate your OPT authorization period and reduce your chances of a STEM extension later.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
STEM OPT extensions require your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Ask the HR team at University of Nevada, Reno to confirm their E-Verify status before you sign an offer, so your 24-month extension isn't at risk the moment your standard 12-month OPT period ends.
Target research and grant-funded positions specifically
University of Nevada, Reno runs federally funded research programs that regularly bring on OPT students as research assistants or lab coordinators. These positions are often posted through departmental pages rather than the central careers portal, so check individual college and institute listings directly.
Ask about the H-1B transition timeline upfront
Universities plan annual H-1B filings around the April cap deadline. During your interview at University of Nevada, Reno, ask HR whether they've sponsored H-1B for OPT hires before and what their internal approval process looks like, so you can gauge whether the transition is realistic before your OPT expires.
