Target STEM departments for extension eligibility
University of Oklahoma's engineering, computer science, and natural sciences departments are most likely to offer roles that qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Confirm the role's SOC code matches a DHS-designated STEM field before accepting an offer.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before your start date
STEM OPT extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Confirm University of Oklahoma's enrollment status with HR before your OPT EAD expires. Starting work without this confirmation puts your 24-month extension eligibility at risk.
Align your application timeline with academic hiring cycles
Universities hire heavily in spring for positions starting in summer or fall. Submit applications three to four months before your OPT start date so hiring managers have time to process offers before your F-1 grace period ends and your EAD becomes active.
Search verified OPT employer records on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to check University of Oklahoma's visa sponsorship history across role types. Filtering by department and visa category helps you identify which teams have consistently hired international students, so you target your application where the hiring pattern already exists.
Prepare your training plan documentation early
For STEM OPT, your employer and DSO must co-sign Form I-983, the training plan. Draft a detailed learning objectives section tied to your specific role at University of Oklahoma well before your 90-day STEM extension application window opens with USCIS.
Benchmark your salary against OFLC prevailing wages
Education sector salaries vary widely by role. Use the OFLC Wage Search to find the prevailing wage for your occupation in Norman, Oklahoma before negotiating your offer. This figure also matters if University of Oklahoma later sponsors your H-1B, since LCA compliance depends on it.
University of Oklahoma OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does University of Oklahoma sponsor OPT visas?
University of Oklahoma doesn't sponsor OPT directly. OPT is work authorization granted by USCIS to eligible F-1 students. What University of Oklahoma does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. For STEM OPT extensions, the university must be enrolled in E-Verify, which allows eligible employees to extend their work authorization by 24 months.
Which departments at University of Oklahoma most commonly hire OPT students?
Research-intensive departments in engineering, computer science, and the natural sciences tend to hire OPT students most actively, given the alignment with STEM-designated SOC codes that qualify for the 24-month extension. Administrative, student services, and humanities roles also hire OPT students but may not offer STEM extension eligibility.
How do I find OPT-eligible jobs at University of Oklahoma?
Use Migrate Mate to filter University of Oklahoma job listings by visa type and department. Cross-reference any role you find with O*NET to confirm its SOC code falls under a DHS-designated STEM occupation if STEM OPT extension eligibility matters to your situation. Apply through University of Oklahoma's official HR portal and flag your OPT status early in the process.
How do I know if University of Oklahoma will sponsor my H-1B after OPT?
H-1B sponsorship is separate from OPT hiring and depends on the specific role, department budget, and the university's sponsorship policies at the time. Ask directly during the offer negotiation stage whether the position is eligible for H-1B sponsorship. Roles in sponsored research and technical administration tend to have stronger H-1B sponsorship precedent than short-term project positions.
How do I time my OPT application to align with a University of Oklahoma offer?
USCIS recommends filing your OPT application up to 90 days before your program end date. University of Oklahoma's academic hiring cycle peaks in spring, so submit your OPT application early enough that your EAD arrives before your intended start date. Delays in USCIS processing can affect your eligibility window, so confirm your application receipt date with your DSO.
How does University of Oklahoma hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. University of Oklahoma can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check University of Oklahoma's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
