Target research and academic support roles
UVA's strongest OPT hiring tends to cluster in research labs, data analysis, IT infrastructure, and academic program coordination. Search specifically within the Office of Research and individual schools like Darden or Engineering, where project-based roles align well with OPT authorization timelines.
Verify your role qualifies as specialty occupation
Before applying, cross-reference your target job title against O*NET to confirm it requires a directly related bachelor's degree. Roles categorized as general administration at UVA may not support a later H-1B petition, so specialty-occupation alignment matters from day one.
Confirm UVA's E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer
STEM OPT's 24-month extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. UVA is a large public institution enrolled in E-Verify, but verify this with HR directly during the offer stage so your STEM extension eligibility isn't disrupted by a department-level exception.
Use Migrate Mate to find UVA's H-1B filing history
Check which UVA departments have filed H-1B petitions through Migrate Mate's employer search. Departments with consistent H-1B filing history signal a clear OPT-to-H-1B pipeline, which is the strongest indicator that your OPT role could convert into long-term sponsorship.
Benchmark your salary against OFLC Wage Search early
UVA must pay H-1B employees at or above the DOL prevailing wage when sponsorship begins. Look up your occupation's wage level using OFLC Wage Search during negotiations so your offered salary doesn't fall below the threshold and complicate a future H-1B petition.
Time your OPT start date around UVA's hiring cycles
UVA's academic calendar drives its hiring peaks, typically in spring for fall starts and late summer for January positions. Request your OPT EAD start date to align with your anticipated offer, since USCIS recommends applying 90 days before your program end date.
University of Virginia OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does University of Virginia sponsor OPT visas?
UVA doesn't sponsor OPT directly. OPT is work authorization granted by USCIS to F-1 students, not a visa UVA petitions for. What UVA does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. For STEM OPT extensions, UVA's E-Verify enrollment makes it an eligible employer, and it has a history of supporting H-1B sponsorship for employees after OPT ends.
Which departments at University of Virginia typically hire OPT students?
Research-intensive units tend to be the most active, including the schools of Engineering, Data Science, and Medicine, as well as central IT and administrative functions. Academic program coordination and research analyst roles appear frequently. Positions tied to externally funded grants often have more flexibility to accommodate OPT timelines and later H-1B sponsorship.
How do I approach the OPT-to-H-1B transition at University of Virginia?
Start the conversation with your manager and HR well before your OPT expires. UVA has sponsored H-1B visas for employees in qualifying specialty occupations, but the process requires your department to initiate the petition through UVA's immigration counsel. Use Migrate Mate to research which UVA units have the strongest H-1B filing track record before targeting your job search.
How do I confirm University of Virginia is enrolled in E-Verify for my STEM OPT extension?
Ask HR directly and request written confirmation of UVA's E-Verify employer ID during or before your offer stage. STEM OPT requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify and to sign a training plan with your DSO. USCIS requires this enrollment to be active at the time you file for the extension, not just at hire.
What timeline should I expect for H-1B sponsorship after starting on OPT at University of Virginia?
Standard H-1B processing through USCIS takes several months, so UVA's HR and immigration counsel typically need to begin the process well in advance of your OPT expiration. Cap-subject H-1B petitions must be filed by April 1 for an October 1 start date. Starting the sponsorship conversation at least a year before your OPT ends gives you the most runway.
How does University of Virginia hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. University of Virginia can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check University of Virginia's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
