Target departments that employ graduate researchers
Wright State's research centers and STEM graduate programs regularly bring on OPT students in lab, data, and technical support roles. Identify active research grants through the university's sponsored programs office before applying, these positions often have flexible start timelines that align with OPT activation.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
STEM OPT extensions require your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Wright State, as a federal contractor and university, maintains E-Verify enrollment, but confirm this with HR in writing during the offer stage so your DSO can authorize the 24-month extension without delays.
Align your resume to higher education job families
Wright State's hiring teams in IT, advising, finance, and institutional research use internal job classification systems. Map your degree and experience to those functional areas explicitly in your resume, using the role titles and language in their posted job descriptions rather than generic industry terminology.
Search Wright State roles using Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter for Wright State University positions that match your OPT authorization and field of study. It surfaces roles at employers with verified E-Verify status and H-1B filing history, helping you prioritize openings where OPT-to-H-1B transitions are a realistic next step.
Request your offer letter before your OPT start date
Your OPT EAD specifies an exact start date. Wright State's HR onboarding process can take two to three weeks, so request a formal offer letter well in advance. Your DSO needs the employer name, role, and start date to authorize OPT, and delays in paperwork can push your activation window.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating your salary
If Wright State later sponsors you for H-1B, your salary must meet the DOL prevailing wage for your role and location. Run your job title through the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating so your OPT salary already meets that threshold, avoiding a gap when the H-1B petition is filed.
Wright State University OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Wright State University sponsor OPT visas?
Wright State University doesn't sponsor OPT directly, USCIS grants OPT work authorization to eligible F-1 students, not employers. What Wright State does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. The university is enrolled in E-Verify, which is required if you plan to use the 24-month STEM OPT extension while employed there.
Which roles and departments at Wright State University typically hire OPT students?
Wright State most commonly hires OPT students in research, information technology, institutional research, academic advising, and administrative support functions. STEM graduates tend to find the strongest fit in the university's engineering, computer science, and health sciences departments, where project-based and grant-funded roles often align with OPT authorization timelines.
How do I start the process of working at Wright State University on OPT?
Apply through Wright State's official careers portal and identify roles that match your degree field, since OPT requires employment related to your area of study. Once you receive an offer, provide your employer details to your DSO to authorize OPT, then complete USCIS's I-765 process. Wright State's HR team handles standard onboarding after that.
How do I find OPT-eligible jobs at Wright State University using Migrate Mate?
Migrate Mate lets you filter job listings by visa type and employer E-Verify status, so you can identify Wright State University openings that are realistic for OPT holders. It also shows H-1B visa filing history for employers, which helps you assess whether a role could lead to long-term sponsorship after your OPT period ends.
Does Wright State University support the transition from OPT to H-1B?
Wright State has sponsored H-1B visas for employees across multiple departments, making an OPT-to-H-1B transition possible for strong performers. The H-1B requires a separate employer petition filed with USCIS and is subject to the annual cap and lottery. Securing an offer with H-1B intent early in your OPT period gives you the most runway to pursue that path.
How does Wright State University hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. Wright State University can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check Wright State University's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
