Target STEM-designated roles from the start
WSP's engineering and environmental consulting positions often fall under STEM OPT-eligible SOC codes. Before applying, cross-reference the role's job duties against O*NET to confirm the occupation qualifies, so your 24-month extension isn't at risk before you even start.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer
Your STEM OPT extension requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. WSP participates, but always verify the specific office or subsidiary entity on your offer letter is covered, since large firms sometimes have subsidiary entities with separate compliance registrations.
Align your OPT start date with WSP's hiring cycles
WSP recruits heavily through campus programs and summer internships, with full-time cohorts typically onboarding in late summer. Timing your OPT activation to match these windows reduces the gap between your program end date and your employment start date.
Prepare a degree-to-role mapping document early
WSP's hiring managers in consulting often evaluate how directly your degree field maps to the posted role. A one-page document connecting your coursework and capstone projects to specific WSP service lines strengthens your case during the interview process, not just the onboarding paperwork.
Use Migrate Mate to find WSP's OPT hiring history
Searching WSP's verified hiring history on Migrate Mate shows which job titles and practice areas have historically hired OPT students. Use that data to prioritize departments like transportation, water, or environment rather than applying broadly across every open role.
Start the H-1B conversation before your OPT expires
If WSP extends a full-time offer, ask your recruiter about their H-1B sponsorship process during your second or third month on OPT. Filing timelines are tight given the annual April registration window, and WSP's HR teams need lead time to coordinate with their immigration counsel.
WSP OPT Eligibility: Frequently Asked Questions
Does WSP sponsor OPT visas?
WSP doesn't sponsor OPT directly, USCIS grants OPT work authorization to F-1 students, not employers. What WSP does is hire students who already hold an OPT EAD. WSP is enrolled in E-Verify, which is required for STEM OPT 24-month extensions, making it a practical choice for STEM graduates seeking longer post-graduation work authorization.
Which departments at WSP typically hire OPT students?
WSP's engineering, environmental consulting, urban planning, and transportation practices are the most active areas for OPT hires. These teams regularly bring on recent graduates for project-based roles in infrastructure and sustainability. Water resources and geotechnical groups also recruit from universities with strong OPT pipelines, particularly for roles tied to STEM-classified occupations.
How do I confirm my WSP role qualifies for the STEM OPT extension?
Your role must fall under a STEM-designated SOC code listed on the official STEM OPT extension eligibility list maintained by USCIS. Cross-reference your offer letter job title against O*NET to identify the correct SOC code, then confirm it appears on that list. Your DSO at your university must also approve the extension before you submit the I-983 training plan to WSP.
What is the typical timeline for OPT students transitioning to H-1B at WSP?
H-1B visa registration opens each March for an October 1 start date. If you're on a 12-month OPT that started after graduation, you may only have one registration cycle before your authorization expires. STEM OPT's 24-month extension gives you additional cycles. WSP typically works with outside immigration counsel, so flag your timeline to HR well before the registration window opens.
How do I find OPT roles at WSP that match my degree?
Migrate Mate shows WSP's verified hiring history filtered by visa type and job category, which helps you identify which practice areas have actively hired OPT candidates in your field. From there, match your degree discipline to WSP's posted roles using O*NET to confirm the SOC code alignment before applying, giving you a stronger foundation for the STEM OPT extension later.
How does WSP hire OPT students?
OPT is work authorization granted directly to F-1 students after graduation — no employer petition is required. WSP can hire OPT students as soon as their EAD card is approved. STEM degree holders can extend OPT by 24 months when their employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Most companies that hire OPT students also support the transition to H-1B when the student's OPT period is ending. Check WSP's individual postings on Migrate Mate to confirm OPT acceptance per role.
