TITLE: Laboratory Intern
DEPARTMENT: Laboratory
POSITION STATUS/HOURS: Limited Term position (LTE). Full-time hours (36 hours/week) during the months of June, July, August 2026. Continued part-time position of every third weekend through May 2027.
Non-benefit eligible position.
JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of a Medical Lab Technician (MLT) or Medical Technologist (MT), the Lab Intern (LI) will provide direct patient care, gain hands-on experience, and enhance phlebotomy skills. Direct supervision is defined as immediately available to continually coordinate, direct, and inspect the practice of the LI.
The LI can continue in this role for up to 6 months from the date of graduation unless they are unsuccessful in passing the ASCP board exam two times. After successfully passing the ASCP board exam, the LI would be considered for any Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist opportunities that are available at that time. The Lab Department is currently staffed 24/7/365. Call coverage is limited to unexpected changes in schedule. Call response time is 30 minutes.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Perform phlebotomy and/or specimen collection – such as: capillary collection; arterial puncture; and aseptic blood culture collection
- Manage laboratory testing - executes quality control procedures. Also performs the following: hematology testing; blood chemistry testing; blood gas analysis; urinalysis; analysis of body fluids; blood bank services; coagulation testing; microbiology testing; serology testing and miscellaneous laboratory testing
- Demonstrate organizational skills - prioritize patient care responsibilities; gives rationale for clinical decisions
- Demonstrate communication responsibilities – communicate patient information to physician, nurse, or other health care professionals.
- Demonstrate ability to adapt to emergency situations
- Compliance with health and safety standards and guidelines
QUALIFICATIONS
Current Associate Degree or Bachelor Degree lab tech student who is in good standing in their lab tech schooling throughout employment (C or higher).
