About Gusto
At Gusto, we're on a mission to grow the small business economy. We handle the hard stuff—like payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR—so owners can focus on their craft and customers. With teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, we’re proud to support more than 400,000 small businesses across the country, and we’re building a workplace that represents and celebrates the customers we serve. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy.
About The Role
We're looking for seasoned full-stack software engineers to join the teams behind Gusto's product platforms — the shared systems that our product teams build upon — to serve small business owners every day. As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll operate across the full lifecycle of foundational systems: shaping architecture early in the design process, building self-service internal features and APIs, and owning their performance long after launch. That means engineering the core business engine, enabling product teams with reliable backend services, and setting the engineering standard for those around you. If you're drawn to work that combines technical craft with real-world impact — helping power the livelihoods of millions using Gusto products — join us!
Here’s What You’ll Do Day-to-day
- Design, build, and test Gusto core platform services – communications, reporting, dashboards, access, workflows, risk, payments, and compliance capabilities, among others
- Mentor other engineers to help solve some of the hardest technical problems out there in very complex domains and at a large scale
- Help scale one of the largest Ruby/Rails and Javascript/React applications in the world
- Collaborate with our Product Engineering, Product Management, Data, and Design teams to understand customer pain points, come up with solutions, and then prototype, iterate, and launch daily
Here’s What We're Looking For
- Successful applicants typically have 8+ years of software development experience
- Passion for creating scalable, efficient platforms for users
- Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new platform capabilities
- Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks, applying and sharing best practices to evaluate and scale AI use safely across teams
- Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and make measurable user impact at scale
- Experience with large scale refactors, performance and reliability issues, and a strong sense of ownership over all aspects of your platform area
- Ability to mentor engineers to maximize their performance and impact
Others
- Experience in, or interest working in, Ruby on Rails
- Appreciation for a collaborative, test-driven environment
- Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, well-documented code
- Ability to effectively communicate across engineering teams and with business stakeholders
Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $163,000–$204,000 in Denver & most remote locations, and $197,000–$247,000 for San Francisco & New York. Stock equity is additional. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.
Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale. Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas. When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees.
Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Gusto.

Gusto considers qualified applicants with criminal histories, consistent with applicable federal, state and local law. Gusto is also committed to providing reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities and disabled veterans in our job application procedures. Align your stack with Gusto's backend
Gusto's backend runs on Ruby on Rails with service-oriented architecture supporting payroll and tax compliance workflows. Highlighting experience with distributed systems, API design, or financial data processing positions your application closer to the roles they actually hire for.
Prepare your credentials for specialty occupation documentation
For H-1B filing, USCIS requires your backend role to qualify as a specialty occupation. A computer science or software engineering degree helps, but so does documented experience with complex systems that Gusto's compliance-heavy payroll infrastructure demands.
Target the offer stage to confirm sponsorship intent early
Recruiters at companies like Gusto often clarify sponsorship availability at the phone screen. Ask directly whether the specific backend role is approved for visa sponsorship before investing time in multiple interview rounds.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Backend Engineer roles at Gusto
Filtering for sponsoring employers in the accounting and payroll software space saves time. Migrate Mate surfaces Backend Engineer openings at companies with confirmed sponsorship history, so you're not cold-applying and guessing at eligibility.

Find Backend Engineer at Gusto JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Gusto sponsor H-1B visas for Backend Engineers?
Yes, Gusto sponsors H-1B visas for Backend Engineers. The company has a consistent history of filing H-1B petitions for technical roles across its engineering teams. Backend engineering positions at Gusto typically qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS standards, given the degree requirements and technical complexity involved in building payroll and compliance infrastructure.
What visa types does Gusto commonly sponsor for Backend Engineers?
Gusto sponsors H-1B visas for most international backend engineers, E-3 visas for Australian citizens, and employment-based Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 for longer-term sponsorship. The right category depends on your nationality, degree background, and where you are in the immigration process. Confirming which pathway applies to you before the offer stage avoids delays.
How do I apply for Backend Engineer jobs at Gusto?
Applications go through Gusto's careers page, where backend roles are listed by team and seniority level. You can also find open Backend Engineer positions at Gusto filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate, which helps you confirm sponsorship is available before applying. Tailoring your resume to highlight systems work relevant to payroll or financial data processing strengthens your application.
What qualifications and experience does Gusto look for in Backend Engineers?
Gusto typically hires backend engineers with strong fundamentals in Ruby on Rails, distributed systems design, and API development. Experience with high-reliability systems in regulated industries like fintech or payroll software is a differentiator. A bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field is expected and supports the specialty occupation standard USCIS applies to H-1B petitions.
How do I think about the H-1B timeline when targeting a role at Gusto?
USCIS H-1B registration typically opens in early March, with selections announced shortly after and an October 1 start date for approved petitions. If you're interviewing at Gusto outside that window, ask whether an E-3 visa applies if you're Australian, or whether the role qualifies for any cap-exempt pathway. Building your job search timeline around the March registration window gives you the most flexibility.
