About The Role
We're looking for a detail driven problem solver who thrives on precision. As a ConversionOps Associate, you'll independently manage the transfer of retirement plans from prior providers onto our platform. That means validating asset allocations, reconciling trust data, and establishing participant loan records before going live. You'll partner closely with CX Onboarding, Compliance, and Reconciliations to catch discrepancies before they become downstream problems. If you're energized by high stakes work, get satisfaction from finding the one number that doesn't add up, and want to build the operational foundation that makes every conversion go smoothly, this role is for you.
About The Team
At Gusto 401(k), conversions are the foundation of trust. Before a plan ever starts, our ConversionOps team has already moved every dollar, every loan, and every historical record into place, accurately and on time.
Here’s What You’ll Do Day-to-day
- Own asset allocations. Independently manage participant level asset allocations during plan conversions, ensuring accurate parsing, validation, and allocation of transferred funds.
- Reconcile with precision. Review trust reports and legacy provider data to reconcile asset balances prior to system upload, and validate fund mapping, participant elections, and allocation logic to support accurate account setup at go live.
- Resolve discrepancies. Perform ad hoc reconciliation of cash movements and asset balances during and after conversion, and drive open items to resolution.
- Establish loan records. Set up and configure participant loan records during conversion, ensuring accurate balances, repayment schedules, and payroll alignment prior to plan activation.
- Protect data integrity. Ensure historical data supports downstream compliance testing and reporting requirements.
- Catch issues early. Identify gaps or inconsistencies in source data, and partner proactively with client facing teams to resolve them before go live.
- Eliminate downstream pain. Make sure all required data is collected, validated, and uploaded accurately before plan activation, so testing, compliance, and 5500 processing can run without rework.
- Collaborate cross functionally. Partner closely with Client Success, Onboarding, Compliance, and Reconciliations to resolve discrepancies in trust reports, asset allocations, and participant level data.
- Improve how we work. Contribute to automation initiatives and tooling enhancements that improve conversion accuracy and efficiency.
Here’s What We're Looking For
- 3+ years of experience in retirement plan administration, financial operations, or onboarding focused operational roles.
- Strong understanding of contribution types (pre tax, Roth, employer), loan structures, and participant level retirement data.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel, including lookup functions, pivot tables, data validation, and error analysis.
- Ability to independently manage competing priorities in a high volume, deadline driven environment.
- Adaptability to shift with changing priorities without losing focus on quality.
- Quick product mastery to pick up new tools and platforms fast and can speak to them with confidence.
- Strong analytical mindset with high attention to detail and a systems thinking orientation.
- 401(k) experience supporting plan conversions, asset transitions, loans, or trust reconciliation preferred.
- Clear-headed problem solving — you diagnose issues at both individual and systemic levels and implement solutions that stick.
Our cash compensation range for this role is $68,570/year to $84,000/year in Denver. Additional locations will vary based on our geographical pay approach. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate location, experience, and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed above. Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale. Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas. When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees.

Target roles at the intersection of finance and technology
Gusto sits in the accounting and HR software space, so roles in payroll engineering, tax compliance, and financial systems tend to align well with the specialty occupation requirements for H-1B and E-3 sponsorship. Lead with technical depth in your application.
Highlight experience with payroll or benefits platforms
Gusto's core product serves small business accounting and HR needs. Candidates who can demonstrate hands-on experience with payroll systems, compliance workflows, or accounting software will stand out as directly relevant to the business, which strengthens sponsorship justification.
Understand that Gusto sponsors multiple visa types
Gusto has a track record sponsoring H-1B, E-3, and Green Card pathways. If you're an Australian citizen, the E-3 is faster and less competitive than the H-1B lottery, confirm your visa type eligibility before applying to target the right roles.
Apply with your sponsorship needs stated clearly and early
Companies in the accounting software space have established legal and HR infrastructure for immigration. Don't bury your visa status in the application, Gusto's recruiting team is equipped to evaluate sponsorship needs, and transparency speeds up the screening process.
Focus your search on verified sponsors, not guesswork
Not every company that claims to sponsor actually follows through consistently. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history, making it easier to identify whether Gusto has sponsored your specific visa type before applying.
Prepare for a structured, multi-stage interview process
Gusto typically runs several interview rounds covering technical skills, cross-functional collaboration, and cultural fit. For visa applicants, timeline matters, factor in that sponsorship processing adds weeks to your start date, and communicate your availability and any deadline constraints early.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Gusto sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Gusto sponsors H-1B visas. The company has an established track record of filing H-1B petitions, particularly for technical and specialized roles in engineering, finance, and operations. As an active H-1B sponsor in the accounting and HR software industry, Gusto has the legal infrastructure in place to support international candidates through the process, including the annual lottery registration window each March.
What visa types does Gusto sponsor?
Gusto sponsors H-1B and E-3 visa nonimmigrant work visas, as well as immigrant visa pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards. Australian citizens should note the E-3 visa option, which bypasses the H-1B lottery and is generally faster to obtain. Green Card sponsorship signals a meaningful long-term commitment to retaining international talent, which is a positive sign for candidates evaluating Gusto as a visa sponsor.
Which roles at Gusto are most likely to receive visa sponsorship?
Sponsorship at Gusto is most common in roles requiring specialized technical or domain expertise, software engineering, data science, tax and compliance, and finance operations are areas where the specialty occupation standard is well-established. Accounting and HR software companies like Gusto regularly sponsor these role types because the degree and skills requirements are well-defined, making petitions easier to support with documentation.
How do I find open roles at Gusto that offer visa sponsorship?
The most reliable approach is to use a platform that filters by verified sponsorship history rather than relying on job listings that may not accurately reflect a company's immigration practices. Migrate Mate lets you browse open roles at companies like Gusto that have a documented track record of sponsoring specific visa types, so you can focus your applications where sponsorship is genuinely available.
How do I time my application to Gusto given H-1B lottery deadlines?
The H-1B lottery registration opens in March each year, with petitions filed for an October 1 start date. If you're targeting Gusto and need H-1B sponsorship, aim to have an offer in hand by February so your employer can register you in time. Starting the interview process in late fall or early winter gives you the most runway. If you're eligible for the E-3, the timeline is more flexible since there's no lottery or annual cap to worry about.
