About Gusto
At Gusto, we're on a mission to grow the small business economy. We handle the hard stuff—like payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR—so owners can focus on their craft and customers. With teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, we’re proud to support more than 400,000 small businesses across the country, and we’re building a workplace that represents and celebrates the customers we serve. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy.
About The Role
Gusto is looking for highly skilled and motivated Data Scientists with extensive experience (7+ years) applying their expertise in a business environment. As a Staff Data Scientist, you will play a crucial role in leveraging experimentation, statistical inference, and causal analysis to drive strategic decision making that contributes to the overall success of our organization. The ideal candidate is a trusted data storyteller with strong statistical and coding skills, and a passion for applying these skills to help small businesses thrive.
About The Team
In this role you will work closely with our Product, Engineering, Design, Finance, and other Data teams to become an expert in the data for your domain, define and track metrics that help us understand our business performance, and dive deep into our Payroll, Benefits, and HR data to deliver insights and answer questions. You’ll also integrate AI-assisted practices to accelerate analysis, enhance rigor, and expand the reach of insights across Gusto. We have multiple senior roles open on both our (1) Growth and (2) Core Products data science teams.
Here’s What You’ll Do Day-to-day
- Lead: Own ambiguous problems, design analysis frameworks, and introduce structure that scales across multiple product domains.
- Strategic Partnership: Collaborate with product managers, engineering leads, designers, and operations teams to proactively identify opportunities, align on strategy, and guide data-informed decision-making.
- Analytical Rigor: Apply advanced statistical methods, causal inference, experimentation, and AI-assisted analytics to surface drivers of product performance, separating signal from noise.
- Experimentation & Measurement: Design, analyze, and interpret experiments; ensure insights highlight trade-offs and limitations based on sample size and data quality.
- Execution: Deliver multiple high-impact projects, balancing trade-offs to maximize business value, and maintain clear expectations of deliverables and timelines.
- Communication: Present complex findings in a structured, compelling way to technical and non-technical stakeholders, fostering a data-informed mindset across the company.
- Independence: Work with minimal guidance to prioritize, create, and deliver data science roadmaps, proactively resolving conflicts or misalignment across stakeholders.
- Scaling the Craft: Mentor other data practitioners, up-level team best practices in experimentation, statistical modeling, and metric interpretation. Drive improvements in data quality, rigor, and adoption of better data capabilities leveraging AI-native tools and workflows across the org.
Here’s What We're Looking For
- 7–10 years of experience in Data Science at a product-focused software company.
- Strong SQL skills and comfort with Python.
- Proven ability to apply statistical methods, causal inference, AI tools, and experimental design to real business problems.
- Excellent communication skills, with a track record of influencing cross-functional stakeholders and leadership.
- Demonstrated experience leading large, technically complex projects with clear business impact.
- A proactive, resilient problem-solver who independently structures ambiguous problems into actionable insights.
- Passion for mentoring others and raising the bar for data science craft across the team.
- BS/MS/PhD in a quantitative field (Statistics, Economics, Computer Science, Applied Math, etc.) or equivalent industry experience.
Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $154,000/yr - $181,000/yr in Denver, and $175,000/yr - $225,000 for San Francisco and New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Frame your credentials around payroll data systems
Gusto's Data Contributor roles focus on payroll, tax, and accounting data pipelines. Highlight experience with structured financial datasets, data validation workflows, or accounting software integrations in your resume before you apply.
Target Gusto's accounting data teams directly
Gusto organizes its data function around specific product domains, including payroll and benefits. Search for open Data Contributor postings filtered by those domains so your application reaches the team where your accounting data background is most relevant.
Clarify E-3 eligibility before your first interview
Australian citizens can pursue the E-3 visa for a Data Contributor role at Gusto without entering the H-1B lottery. Confirm your degree field aligns with the specialty occupation standard before your first recruiter call so the conversation stays on track.
Ask about the LCA during the offer stage
Gusto must file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL before your H-1B petition can proceed. Ask your recruiter whether this filing is already in progress or will begin after you sign, since LCA certification timelines affect your actual start date.
Use Migrate Mate to surface active Data Contributor openings at Gusto
Sponsorship-eligible Data Contributor roles at Gusto aren't always labeled clearly on general job boards. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Gusto postings that align with your visa type and target the right openings from the start.
Prepare your degree equivalency documentation early
Gusto's Data Contributor roles in accounting and auditing contexts typically require a degree in a directly related field. If your credential is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation completed before USCIS adjudicates your H-1B petition to avoid delays.

Find Data Contributor at Gusto JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Gusto sponsor H-1B visas for Data Contributors?
Yes, Gusto sponsors H-1B visas for Data Contributor roles. Because the H-1B is subject to an annual cap and lottery, timing matters. Gusto would need to submit your registration during the lottery window, typically in March for an October 1 start. Confirm sponsorship willingness explicitly during the offer stage before the registration deadline passes.
Which visa types are commonly used for Data Contributor roles at Gusto?
Gusto sponsors H-1B, E-3, and Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 for Data Contributor positions. Australian citizens should specifically ask about the E-3, which has no lottery and can be processed at a U.S. consulate. For long-term pathways, EB-3 is common for roles where the position meets DOL's PERM labor certification requirements.
What qualifications or experience are expected for Data Contributor roles at Gusto?
Gusto's Data Contributor roles in the accounting and auditing space typically require a background in data management, financial data systems, or a related technical field. Familiarity with payroll data structures, tax datasets, or accounting workflows is a practical differentiator. A bachelor's degree in a directly relevant field is standard, and USCIS will assess whether the degree supports the specialty occupation classification.
How do I apply for Data Contributor jobs at Gusto?
You can find Data Contributor openings at Gusto through Migrate Mate, which filters listings by visa sponsorship type so you can identify roles that match your specific situation. When you apply, tailor your resume to Gusto's focus on payroll and financial data infrastructure, and address your visa sponsorship needs directly in your cover communication rather than waiting for the offer stage.
How do I manage the timeline between a job offer and my visa start date at Gusto?
For H-1B transfers from another employer, Gusto can file for a status change and you may be able to start once USCIS issues a receipt notice. For new H-1B cap cases, you'd need to win the lottery in March and cannot start before October 1. For E-3 applicants, consular processing typically runs two to four weeks after the appointment is scheduled, which is considerably faster.
