INTRODUCTION
Imagine what you could do here! The people here at Apple don’t just create products - they build the kind of wonder that’s revolutionized entire industries. It’s the diversity of those people and their ideas that inspires the innovation that runs through everything we do, from amazing technology to industry-leading environmental efforts. At Apple, inclusion is a shared responsibility, and we work together to foster a culture where everyone belongs and is inspired to do their best work!
We’re a diverse collective of thinkers and doers, continuously reimagining our products and practices to help people do what they love in new ways. That innovation is inspired by a shared commitment to great work - and to each other. Because learning from the people here means we’re learning from the best. Retail Operations creates the tools and programs that empower our teams to provide a one of a kind, only at Apple experience. We do this by obsessing over the employee and customer experience, and driving a global strategy that sets the bar.
The Retail Technology Engineering team designs, develops and deploys apps and digital experiences that shape the future of Apple Retail stores globally. You'll be a part of a dynamic team of full stack engineers, who work in partnership with various cross-functional Apple teams, to deliver innovative, scalable solutions to tens of thousands of Apple devices across 500+ stores worldwide. If you're self-motivated, passionate about building impactful products and mastering new technologies, this is your opportunity to thrive.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Senior Backend Engineer on this team, you’ll design and evolve the services that deliver those experiences across a global fleet. Our services must be ready on a cadence set by Apple’s product launches rather than by sprint planning. This is a backend role with close ties to our products: the decisions you make in code show up as soon as customers enter the store. At this level, you’re the engineer others turn to when a tradeoff isn’t obvious, when a system needs to evolve faster than it can be rewritten, or when a choice made today shapes what’s possible two launches from now. You’ll set the technical bar across our services, mentor the engineers around you, and own outcomes end-to-end with product, design, and the teams running the stores themselves. What you build reaches millions of customers in our stores each year. It shapes how they experience Apple’s products and helps inform their choices.
- Design, develop, and maintain backend systems for Retail Operations.
- Take ownership of service reliability and performance in production, including readiness for retail launches.
- Lead technical projects, providing guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.
- Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code across our stack (Python, Go, and Ruby).
- Optimize database performance and ensure data integrity in PostgreSQL and our data warehouse.
- Present technical proposals and solutions to senior management and stakeholders.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including designers, frontend engineers, native app developers, and product owners, to deliver high-quality products.
- Participate in code reviews and contribute to improving our development processes.
- Drive innovation by identifying new opportunities to improve our systems and processes.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- 7+ years of experience in backend software development.
- Proven ability to design, develop, and deploy scalable and resilient backend systems.
- Excellent knowledge of data structures, algorithms, design patterns, and software engineering principles.
- Experience in leading technical projects and mentoring junior engineers.
- Strong proficiency in at least one of Python, Go, or Ruby, with a willingness to work across all three.
- Extensive experience with database technologies, particularly PostgreSQL.
- Solid understanding of data warehousing concepts and experience with a major warehouse platform.
- Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies like Kubernetes.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience operating distributed systems in production environments with strict availability requirements.
- Experience with cloud platforms, particularly AWS.
- Experience with Snowflake.
- Excellent communication skills, including experience presenting technical work to senior management and non-technical audiences.

Align your stack with Apple's infrastructure
Apple's backend roles consistently emphasize Swift, C++, and large-scale distributed systems. Framing your resume around high-throughput service design and on-device data pipelines positions you as a direct match for their engineering priorities, not a generalist.
Target teams with hardware-adjacent backend work
Apple's hardware product lines, from iPhone to Apple Silicon, require backend engineers who understand firmware integration and device telemetry. Applying to teams like iCloud, Maps, or Health gives you stronger sponsorship footing than purely software-facing orgs.
Get your credential evaluation done early
If your degree is from outside the U.S., have it evaluated by a NACES-approved agency before applying. Apple's legal team will need this for specialty occupation documentation, and delays in evaluation can stall your H-1B filing timeline.
Understand the H-1B1 and E-3 options for your nationality
If you're from Singapore or Australia, you're eligible for the H-1B1 visa or E-3 respectively. These cap-exempt categories skip the lottery entirely, and Apple actively uses both. Confirm your nationality-specific eligibility before your offer negotiation so your recruiter routes the petition correctly.
Ask about premium processing before signing your offer
USCIS premium processing reduces H-1B adjudication to 15 business days. For Backend Engineer roles with a start date tied to a product cycle, clarify with your Apple recruiter upfront whether the company will elect premium processing for your petition.
Find Apple Backend Engineer openings on Migrate Mate
Filtering sponsorship-confirmed roles saves significant time when you're working against an OPT or grace period deadline. Use Migrate Mate to browse Backend Engineer openings at Apple where visa sponsorship has been documented.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Apple sponsor H-1B visas for Backend Engineers?
Yes, Apple sponsors H-1B visas for Backend Engineers. The company participates in the annual H-1B cap lottery and also files petitions outside the lottery for cap-exempt situations, such as candidates transferring from cap-exempt employers. Apple's legal team handles petitions across all major nonimmigrant work visa categories for engineering roles.
How do I apply for Backend Engineer jobs at Apple?
Applications go through Apple's careers portal at jobs.apple.com. Backend Engineer roles are listed by team, so filtering by function rather than title yields more results. You can also browse sponsorship-confirmed openings on Migrate Mate, which surfaces Apple roles where visa sponsorship has been documented, saving you from applying to positions that may not support your visa category.
Which visa types does Apple commonly use for Backend Engineers?
Apple sponsors H-1B, H-1B1 visa (for Singaporean nationals), E-3 visa (for Australian nationals), and TN visa (for Canadian and Mexican nationals) for Backend Engineer roles. For longer-term pathways, Apple also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship. F-1 OPT and CPT are accepted for students completing internships or early-career positions.
What qualifications does Apple expect for Backend Engineer roles?
Apple's Backend Engineer roles typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. Practical experience with distributed systems, REST API design, and performance-critical infrastructure matters significantly. Familiarity with Apple's own frameworks or experience building backend services at scale strengthens an application considerably. USCIS requires the role to qualify as a specialty occupation, so degree-field alignment with the job description matters for H-1B purposes.
How do I time my application if I'm on F-1 OPT or approaching a visa deadline?
If you're on F-1 OPT, the H-1B cap-gap rule can extend your work authorization through September 30 if your OPT expires while a timely H-1B petition is pending or approved. Apple's recruiting cycle runs year-round, but targeting offers before the April lottery registration window gives your employer enough lead time to file. STEM OPT extension, if eligible, adds up to 24 additional months of work authorization as a buffer.
