Build a portfolio around mechanical tolerances
Apple's CAD teams evaluate candidates on precise, constraint-driven design work. Document projects where you owned GD&T callouts, managed tight tolerance stacks, or designed for automated assembly. Vague portfolio entries get screened out before sponsorship ever becomes a conversation.
Target Apple's product-specific hardware teams
Apple hires CAD Engineers across distinct product lines: iPhone, Mac, AirPods, and Vision Pro. Roles in enclosure design differ from those in acoustics or thermal systems. Identify which product group matches your background and tailor your application directly to that team's open requisitions.
Understand which visa fits your nationality first
Apple sponsors H-1B, E-3, H-1B1 visa, and TN visas for engineering roles. If you're Australian, the E-3 avoids the H-1B lottery entirely. If you're Canadian or Mexican, the TN can be processed at the border. Knowing this before your offer conversation means you're not starting from zero when HR asks.
Confirm your OPT start date aligns with onboarding
If you're on F-1 OPT, Apple's onboarding timelines for hardware roles can run eight to twelve weeks from offer to start date. A misaligned OPT start date can create gaps in work authorization. File your STEM OPT extension with USCIS before your initial OPT expiration to preserve continuity if your start date shifts.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open CAD Engineer roles by visa type
Apple posts CAD Engineer requisitions across multiple teams simultaneously, and not all sponsorship types apply to every role. Use Migrate Mate to filter open positions by the visa category you need so you're only applying to roles where your sponsorship situation is already a match.
Prepare your credential documentation before the offer stage
Apple's immigration team will verify that your degree field aligns with the CAD Engineer specialty occupation definition. If your degree is in mechanical engineering, industrial design, or a related field, gather official transcripts and any credential evaluations early. Delays here push back your USCIS petition filing date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Apple sponsor H-1B visas for CAD Engineers?
Yes, Apple sponsors H-1B visas for CAD Engineers. Because H-1B is subject to the annual lottery, your petition must be registered in March for an October 1 start date. Apple's immigration team manages the filing process, but the lottery outcome is outside anyone's control. Australians can sidestep the lottery entirely by applying for the E-3 visa instead.
How do I apply for CAD Engineer jobs at Apple?
Apply directly through Apple's careers site or browse current openings filtered by visa type on Migrate Mate. CAD Engineer roles at Apple are posted by product team and location, so searching by function and site, such as Cupertino hardware roles, gives you the most relevant results. Tailor your resume to the specific product line mentioned in the job description before submitting.
Which visa types does Apple commonly use for CAD Engineers?
Apple uses H-1B for most international CAD Engineers, along with E-3 visa for Australian citizens and H-1B1 visa for Chilean and Singaporean nationals. F-1 OPT and STEM OPT extensions are common for new graduates. Canadian and Mexican engineers working in qualifying engineering categories may also enter on a TN visa. Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 is available for longer-term employees.
What qualifications does Apple expect for CAD Engineer roles?
Apple's CAD Engineer postings typically require a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, product design, or a closely related field. Hands-on experience with CAD tools such as CATIA, SolidWorks, or NX is expected, along with working knowledge of GD&T and design for manufacturability. Roles tied to consumer hardware often require familiarity with tight-tolerance components and high-volume production constraints.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take at Apple for CAD Engineers?
Timeline depends on the visa type. E-3 and TN visas can be processed in a matter of weeks through consular appointments. H-1B petitions filed under standard processing take three to six months after October 1. USCIS premium processing reduces that to roughly two to three weeks for an additional fee. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 typically takes one to three years or longer depending on your country of birth.
