Align your credentials to Apple's specialty occupation standard
Apple's Senior Software Engineering roles require a directly related degree field, not just any bachelor's. A degree in computer science, computer engineering, or software engineering maps cleanly. A business or unrelated STEM degree may require supporting documentation showing the field's connection to the specific role.
Target teams with predictable annual hiring cycles
Apple's silicon, developer tools, and platform engineering teams post Senior Software Engineering roles consistently ahead of H-1B cap season. Timing your application for roles that open between October and January gives your employer the runway to file before the April 1 registration window.
Understand how Apple handles H-1B cap-exempt scenarios
If you're currently on F-1 OPT or transitioning from another cap-subject employer, Apple must file a new H-1B registration for you. Cap-exempt transfers don't apply here. Confirm with your recruiting contact early whether your start date depends on lottery selection.
Prepare for PERM by documenting your unique qualifications now
Apple initiates PERM labor certification for EB-2 and EB-3 green card sponsorship after you're established in role. The PERM process requires proving no equally qualified U.S. workers are available. Document specialized skills in Apple-specific frameworks, proprietary toolchains, or systems architecture that set you apart before the recruitment phase begins.
Verify your work authorization status before your OPT expires
Apple uses E-Verify for all new hires, so your work authorization must be confirmed at onboarding. If your OPT end date falls before an H-1B approval, request a timely filed receipt notice from Apple's immigration team immediately after the April 1 filing window to confirm your authorized continuation of employment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Apple sponsor H-1B visas for Senior Software Engineers?
Yes, Apple sponsors H-1B visas for Senior Software Engineering roles. This includes both cap-subject H-1B petitions filed through the annual USCIS lottery and H-1B transfers for candidates already holding approved H-1B status with another employer. Apple also sponsors the H-1B1 visa for Singaporean and Chilean nationals and the E-3 visa for Australian citizens, both of which bypass the cap and lottery entirely.
How do I apply for Senior Software Engineering jobs at Apple?
Apply directly through Apple's careers site and tailor your resume to the specific team and technology stack listed in the posting. Apple's Senior Software Engineering interviews typically include multiple rounds covering data structures, system design, and domain-specific technical depth. Migrate Mate lets you filter Apple's open Senior Software Engineering roles by visa sponsorship type before you apply, so you can confirm your pathway upfront.
Which visa types does Apple commonly use for Senior Software Engineering roles?
Apple sponsors H-1B, H-1B1 visa, E-3, TN visa, and F-1 OPT and CPT for Senior Software Engineering positions. For permanent residence, Apple files EB-2 and EB-3 petitions, typically through PERM labor certification. Australian citizens and Canadian nationals benefit from the E-3 and TN visa pathways respectively, both of which have no annual lottery and can be initiated year-round once an offer is in place.
What qualifications does Apple expect for Senior Software Engineering roles?
Apple's Senior Software Engineering roles typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field, plus substantial hands-on experience in a relevant engineering domain. Roles across Apple's silicon, frameworks, and platform teams often require deep expertise in specific languages such as Swift, C++, or Rust and familiarity with large-scale distributed systems or low-level hardware-software integration depending on the team.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for Apple Senior Software Engineering hires?
Timeline depends on the visa category. E-3 and TN sponsorship can move quickly once an offer is finalized, with appointments available within weeks at some consulates. H-1B sponsorship tied to the cap requires registration in March with an October 1 start date at the earliest. USCIS premium processing, which Apple may elect to use, can reduce adjudication time to roughly 15 business days after filing.
