With technical and leadership expertise, you manage engineers across multiple teams and locations, a large product budget and oversee the deployment of large-scale projects across multiple sites internationally.
In this role, you will create an ecosystem within Google where teams can effectively leverage location history, on-device platform components, and privacy/security frameworks to move from passive reporting to providing intelligent, predictive context that assists users proactively throughout their Maps journey.

The Geo team also enables developers to use the power of Google Maps platforms to enhance their apps and websites. As they plot a course for the future of mapping, they are solving complex computer science problems, designing beautiful and intuitive product experiences, and improving our understanding of the real world.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Senior Software Engineering Jobs at Google Jobs
Align your portfolio to Google's engineering ladder
Google's Senior Software Engineer level expects demonstrated system design ownership and cross-functional impact. Before applying, document projects where you led architecture decisions at scale, not just implemented features. Interviewers assess this through design rounds.
Search verified sponsoring roles on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Senior Software Engineering openings at Google by visa type, so you're applying to roles with confirmed sponsorship history rather than guessing from generic job board listings.
Time your application around the H-1B cap window
If you need H-1B sponsorship, Google must file your petition during the annual cap registration window in March for an October 1 start. Plan your interview process to conclude by late January to give HR enough lead time.
Prepare your credentials for specialty occupation documentation
USCIS requires that your degree directly relates to software engineering. If your degree is in a tangential field like physics or mathematics, gather evidence of coursework and prior job titles that establish the direct connection before your offer stage.
Confirm your I-140 portability window if switching internally
If you join Google while a green card petition is in progress from a prior employer, USCIS allows you to port an approved I-140 after 180 days in valid status. Confirm the job duties remain in the same occupational classification before transferring.

Find Senior Software Engineering at Google JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Google sponsor H-1B visas for Senior Software Engineers?
Yes, Google sponsors H-1B visas for Senior Software Engineering roles. Google participates in the annual H-1B cap lottery each March and files petitions for selected candidates for an October 1 start. If you're an Australian citizen, Google also sponsors the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and can result in a faster start date.
How do I apply for Senior Software Engineering jobs at Google?
You can find Senior Software Engineering openings at Google through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa sponsorship type so you apply only where sponsorship is confirmed. Google's interview process typically includes recruiter screening, technical phone interviews focused on algorithms and data structures, and a system design round that carries significant weight at the Senior level.
Which visa types does Google commonly use for Senior Software Engineers?
Google sponsors H-1B, H-1B1, and E-3 visas for Senior Software Engineering positions. H-1B is the most common path for nationals of most countries. H-1B1 is available to Chilean and Singaporean citizens without a lottery. E-3 is available exclusively to Australian citizens and offers a faster, cap-exempt alternative with two-year renewable periods.
What qualifications does Google expect for a Senior Software Engineer role?
Google's Senior Software Engineer level typically requires a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a closely related field, plus several years of industry experience demonstrating ownership of complex systems. You'll be assessed on coding proficiency, system design at scale, and the ability to lead technical direction across teams. A degree in a non-CS field requires clear evidence of equivalent depth.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take after a Google offer?
Timeline depends on visa type. For H-1B, Google must file during the March registration window, with work authorization beginning October 1 at the earliest. E-3 processing at a U.S. consulate typically takes two to four weeks after your LCA is certified by the DOL. Premium processing through USCIS is available for H-1B and can reduce the adjudication window to 15 business days.
