INTRODUCTION
The Perception team is pioneering the development of a multi-modality foundation model to drive the next generation of autonomous system intelligence. As a Model Optimization & Deployment Engineer, you will focus on bringing highly efficient, production-ready large-scale models to our on-vehicle stack. We are looking for experts with hands-on experience in compressing, accelerating, and deploying complex models (LLMs, VLMs, or FMs) for power- and thermal-constrained vehicle SOCs. You will optimize the ML models, write custom CUDA kernels, and build highly concurrent inference code to ensure real-time, deterministic execution on edge devices.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In This Role, You Will
- Optimize large-scale models (LLMs, VLMs) using advanced quantization (PTQ, QAT), mixed-precision inference workflows, and parameter-efficient fine-tuning (LoRA, QLoRA).
- Architect and implement model conversion and compilation pipelines using TensorRT and TensorRT-LLM for edge deployment.
- Perform rigorous parity checking, accuracy recovery, and latency benchmarking between PyTorch frameworks and compiled edge binaries.
- Write and optimize custom CUDA kernels and TensorRT Plugins to maximize memory bandwidth and minimize latency on AI accelerators.
- Write production-level, highly concurrent, and memory-safe C++ and Python code for real-time inference on vehicle SOCs.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Deep expertise in model quantization (PTQ, QAT) and mixed-precision inference workflows (INT8, FP8, INT4, BF16/FP16).
- Proven experience optimizing large-scale models (LLMs, VLMs, or VLAs) utilizing KV-cache optimization (e.g., PagedAttention), Speculative Decoding, and Efficient Attention mechanisms (FlashAttention, Linear Attention).
- Extensive experience with model conversion/compilation pipelines (TensorRT, TensorRT-LLM) and performing rigorous parity/latency benchmarking.
- Proficiency in low-level programming for AI accelerators, specifically writing and optimizing custom CUDA kernels and TensorRT Plugins.
- Production-level C++ (14/17/20) and Python programming skills, with experience writing concurrent, memory-safe, real-time inference code for edge devices.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with distributed training pipelines and model/tensor parallelism (PyTorch Distributed, Ray, DeepSpeed, Megatron-LM) and runtime efficiency optimization for GPU clusters.
- Familiarity with autonomous driving perception stacks (temporal 3D object detection, BEV, 3D Occupancy Networks) and processing multi-modal sensor streams (Vision, LiDAR, Radar).
- Understanding of end-to-end autonomous driving paradigms (VLA models, closed-loop simulation validation).
COMPENSATION
- Base Salary Range: $242,000 - $290,000 a year
There are three major components to compensation for this position: salary, Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs), and Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights. A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package. The listed range applies only to the base salary. Compensation will vary based on geographic location and level. Leveling, as well as positioning within a level, is determined by a range of factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate's relevant years of experience, domain knowledge, and interview performance. Align your portfolio to robotics software domains
Zoox hires senior engineers for perception, planning, simulation, and vehicle software. Tailor your GitHub profile and resume to demonstrate depth in at least one of these domains before applying, since generalist profiles are harder to advance through their technical screens.
Verify your visa category matches the role level
Senior roles at Zoox typically require a specialty occupation determination. If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your STEM OPT authorization covers your specific job title before your first recruiter call, since a mismatch delays offer paperwork on both sides.
Search verified sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Filter by automotive industry and senior engineering roles on Migrate Mate to surface Zoox openings alongside their sponsorship history. This lets you prioritize applications to roles where sponsorship is already an established practice, not an open question.
Prepare for autonomous systems technical depth
Zoox senior engineering interviews go deep on distributed systems, real-time constraints, and safety-critical software design. Review your experience with fault-tolerant architectures and be ready to discuss tradeoffs relevant to vehicle software, not just general backend or cloud engineering.
Understand how H-1B cap timing affects your offer
If you need cap-subject H-1B sponsorship, USCIS only accepts petitions once a year with an October 1 start date. Discuss this timeline with your Zoox recruiter early so the offer letter and onboarding plan account for the lottery window and any premium processing decision.
Ask about Green Card sponsorship during offer negotiation
Companies sponsoring multiple visa categories often have established PERM processes for senior engineers. Raising Green Card sponsorship during the offer stage, before you sign, is standard practice and helps you understand whether EB-2 or EB-3 labor certification is part of the long-term employment package.

Find Senior Software Engineering at Zoox JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Zoox sponsor H-1B visas for Senior Software Engineers?
Yes, Zoox sponsors H-1B visas for Senior Software Engineers. The company operates in a specialized technical domain requiring advanced software expertise, which supports the specialty occupation determination that H-1B petitions require. If you need cap-subject H-1B sponsorship, the annual USCIS lottery and October 1 start date will shape your offer and start timeline, so raise this with the recruiter before the offer stage.
How do I apply for Senior Software Engineering jobs at Zoox?
Applications go through Zoox's careers portal, where Senior Software Engineering roles are posted by team and domain. To find roles that include visa sponsorship, browse Migrate Mate, which surfaces Zoox openings filtered by sponsorship track record. The process typically moves from a recruiter screen to a technical phone interview, then an onsite loop covering system design, coding, and domain-specific depth relevant to autonomous vehicle software.
Which visa types does Zoox commonly sponsor for Senior Software Engineering roles?
Zoox sponsors a range of visa categories for Senior Software Engineers, including H-1B, E-3 for Australian citizens, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals, and H-1B1 for Chilean and Singaporean citizens. F-1 OPT and STEM OPT are also supported for recent graduates. For long-term residents, Zoox has an established path through EB-2 or EB-3 employment-based Green Card sponsorship via the PERM labor certification process.
What qualifications and experience does Zoox expect for Senior Software Engineering roles?
Senior Software Engineering roles at Zoox generally require a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or a closely related field, plus substantial professional experience in software development. Zoox builds autonomous vehicle systems, so depth in areas like perception, motion planning, simulation, real-time systems, or safety-critical software is valued. Candidates with experience shipping production software in robotics, automotive, or aerospace tend to move further through the process.
How do I navigate the timeline from job offer to visa approval at Zoox?
The timeline depends on your visa category. E-3 and TN visas can be obtained in weeks through consular processing or a port of entry, making them the fastest paths. H-1B cap-subject cases require waiting for the annual lottery and an October 1 start date, which can mean planning six to twelve months ahead. USCIS premium processing, available for H-1B petitions, speeds adjudication to 15 business days once the petition is filed, and many employers at this level use it.
