Align your portfolio to Microsoft's engineering pillars
Microsoft's senior engineering roles cluster around Azure, Microsoft 365, AI platforms, and developer tooling. Framing your experience around distributed systems, large-scale cloud services, or AI infrastructure makes your application immediately legible to their recruiting teams.
Prepare for a multi-round systems design process
Microsoft's senior engineering interviews typically include multiple systems design rounds and behavioral interviews using the STAR method. Having concrete examples of owning end-to-end architecture decisions at scale strengthens your case before sponsorship conversations even begin.
Understand which visa category fits your background
Microsoft sponsors H-1B, E-3, and H-1B1 visas for senior engineers. If you're Australian, the E-3 bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely. Knowing which category applies to you before your offer stage prevents delays when the legal team starts the filing process.
Target roles that include explicit sponsorship language
Search for Senior Software Engineering openings at Microsoft on Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for verified sponsoring employers. Roles listed with sponsorship availability signal that the hiring team is already aligned with the company's immigration legal process.
Time your application around the H-1B registration window
If you need H-1B sponsorship, USCIS registration opens in March for an October 1 start date. Joining Microsoft's hiring pipeline by January or February gives their legal team enough lead time to file your registration before the window closes.
Request clarity on LCA filing timelines during the offer stage
Microsoft's immigration team files the Labor Condition Application with the DOL before your H-1B or E-3 petition can proceed. Confirming the expected LCA certification timeline during offer negotiation helps you plan your start date and manage any visa transition gaps.

Find Senior Software Engineering at Microsoft JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Microsoft sponsor H-1B visas for Senior Software Engineers?
Yes, Microsoft sponsors H-1B visas for Senior Software Engineering roles as part of its standard hiring process. The company has a dedicated immigration legal team that manages filings, including the required Labor Condition Application with the DOL and the I-129 petition with USCIS. If you're subject to the H-1B lottery, Microsoft typically coordinates registration in March for an October 1 cap-subject start date.
Which visa types does Microsoft commonly use for Senior Software Engineering roles?
Microsoft sponsors H-1B, E-3, and H-1B1 visas for Senior Software Engineering positions, along with immigrant visa pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship. Australian citizens can use the E-3, which has no lottery and is generally faster to obtain. Canadian and Mexican nationals may qualify for the H-1B1 or TN visa categories, depending on their specific role and background.
What qualifications and experience does Microsoft expect for Senior Software Engineering roles?
Microsoft's Senior Software Engineering roles typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field, along with several years of professional engineering experience. Strong candidates demonstrate hands-on ownership of large-scale systems, proficiency in one or more systems programming languages, and experience with cloud infrastructure. Domain expertise in Azure, AI, or distributed systems is a meaningful differentiator at the senior level.
How do I apply for Senior Software Engineering jobs at Microsoft?
Start by browsing open Senior Software Engineering roles on Migrate Mate, which surfaces verified Microsoft positions that include visa sponsorship. Once you identify a role, apply directly through Microsoft's careers portal and tailor your resume to the specific engineering domain. Microsoft's hiring process typically includes a recruiter screen, technical phone screens, and a virtual or on-site loop with systems design and behavioral rounds.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Microsoft Senior Software Engineering offer?
Timeline depends on your visa category. For H-1B cap-subject cases, the process runs roughly six to nine months from registration to a legal start date. E-3 and H-1B1 consular cases can move faster, often four to ten weeks after your offer is finalized and the LCA is certified by the DOL. Microsoft's immigration team typically initiates the LCA filing within a few weeks of your offer acceptance.
