Frame your program management credentials precisely
Microsoft's Program Development Manager roles require demonstrated experience owning end-to-end program delivery in a software or platform environment. Tailor your resume to show scope, cross-team dependencies managed, and measurable delivery outcomes rather than task-level responsibilities.
Target Microsoft's product and platform orgs specifically
Program Development Manager openings at Microsoft cluster heavily in Azure, Microsoft 365, and Developer Division. Filtering by these orgs when searching gives you higher-signal opportunities where the team structure supports international hiring pipelines.
Browse open roles on Migrate Mate before applying directly
Migrate Mate filters Program Development Manager roles at companies with active visa sponsorship histories. Use it to validate which Microsoft postings are realistically open to sponsored candidates before investing time in the application process.
Understand which visa Microsoft files for this role
Microsoft sponsors H-1B, E-3, and H-1B1 visas for Program Development Managers depending on your nationality. Australian citizens can use the E-3, which has no lottery and a 10,500 annual cap that has never been exhausted, making it a faster path than the H-1B.
Align your offer timeline with the H-1B cap cycle
If you need H-1B sponsorship, Microsoft must file your petition in April for an October 1 start date. Work backward from there when negotiating your offer date so you don't miss the USCIS registration window in March.
Prepare for Microsoft's internal visa process expectations
Once you have an offer, Microsoft's immigration team works with outside counsel to file your petition. Respond to document requests from their legal team within the windows given, as delays on your end can push filing dates past USCIS deadlines.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Microsoft sponsor H-1B visas for Program Development Managers?
Yes, Microsoft sponsors H-1B visas for Program Development Manager roles. This is one of the primary visa categories Microsoft uses for this function. If selected in the H-1B lottery, your start date will be October 1 of the relevant fiscal year. Premium processing is available and often used by large employers like Microsoft to accelerate USCIS adjudication once a petition is filed.
How do I apply for Program Development Manager jobs at Microsoft?
Applications go through Microsoft's careers portal at careers.microsoft.com. Search for Program Development Manager and filter by location and business group. You can also browse verified open roles at Migrate Mate, which surfaces positions at employers with active visa sponsorship histories. Tailor your application to highlight program delivery scope, technical depth, and cross-functional leadership in a software development context.
Which visa types does Microsoft commonly use for Program Development Manager roles?
Microsoft files H-1B, E-3 visa, and H-1B1 visa petitions for Program Development Managers, depending on the candidate's nationality. Australian citizens are eligible for the E-3 visa, which bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely. Chilean and Singapore nationals may qualify for the H-1B1. For candidates pursuing permanent residence, Microsoft also sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card petitions, which involve PERM labor certification through the DOL.
What qualifications does Microsoft expect for a Program Development Manager?
Microsoft's Program Development Manager roles typically require a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field, plus several years of hands-on program management experience in a software development environment. You'll be expected to demonstrate ownership of complex, cross-team programs with measurable delivery outcomes. Familiarity with Agile methodologies, large-scale platform development, and managing interdependencies across distributed teams is commonly assessed during interviews.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take after receiving an offer from Microsoft?
Timeline depends on visa type. For H-1B, the process runs on a fixed government cycle: USCIS registration opens in March, the lottery runs in April, and the earliest start date is October 1. For E-3 candidates, consular processing in Australia typically takes two to six weeks after the employer files the Labor Condition Application with the DOL. Premium processing for H-1B petitions allows USCIS to adjudicate within 15 business days for an additional fee.
