AI Engineer (Contract)
Please note that this is a contract role providing services to Microsoft through external staffing partners of Allegis Global Solutions. If you are selected for this role, you will be employed by AGS and will not be an employee of Microsoft.
Summary
Are you a creative, systems-minded professional who thrives at the intersection of writing, logic, and experimentation? This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of AI-driven content generation within a dynamic gaming studio environment. You will be responsible for designing and refining prompts that power generative content systems, transforming ambiguous ideas into structured, scalable workflows that consistently deliver accurate and engaging results. Operating as a mid-level individual contributor, you will work independently while collaborating with stakeholders to push the boundaries of what AI-generated content can achieve. This is not a traditional writing or engineering role — it is a hybrid discipline that blends creative writing, product thinking, and system design into one exciting and impactful position.
Job Responsibilities:
- Design, write, and iterate on prompts that generate structured, high-quality content
- Build and maintain prompt frameworks that scale across topics and formats
- Test outputs, identify failure patterns, and systematically improve results
- Define rules, constraints, and schemas, including JSON outputs, to enforce consistency
- Evaluate content quality across accuracy, engagement, and repeatability
- Develop new content formats and expand existing ones
- Collaborate on tooling using structured workflows and generative AI platforms
- Rapidly prototype, validate, and refine ideas through hands-on experimentation
- Run small experiments to test variations, compare results, and scale what works
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define new content types and continuously improve generation quality
Requirements
- 2 or more years of prompt design and iteration experience for generative AI systems, or equivalent hands-on experience
- 2 or more years of experience with structured content and data handling, including JSON, schemas, and rule-based systems
- 2 or more years of analytical problem-solving experience, including testing outputs, identifying failure patterns, and improving systems
- Experience with agentic systems or skill-based AI systems is strongly preferred
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and deliver results with minimal oversight
- Strong writing ability with an eye for clarity, tone, and engagement
- Systems thinking with the ability to translate vague goals into structured rules and repeatable outputs
- Experience iterating on AI prompts or working with generative models
- Comfort working with structured data, including JSON, schemas, and validation rules
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to debug outputs and identify failure patterns
- Bias toward action with a test, ship, and improve mindset
- Experience building or scaling content generation systems is a plus
- Familiarity with prompt evaluation, scoring, or test harnesses is a plus
- Background in games, education, or interactive content is a plus
- Light scripting or data manipulation experience is a plus

Align your research portfolio to Microsoft's AI priorities
Microsoft's AI Scientist hiring centers on large language models, multimodal systems, responsible AI, and Azure-integrated research. Tailor your publications, projects, and GitHub contributions to these areas before applying so your work maps directly to open team needs.
Target teams that file early each fiscal year
Microsoft's immigration team typically coordinates H-1B filings well ahead of the April lottery window. If you receive an offer in late fall or winter, confirm your start date accounts for cap-subject processing and the October 1 employment start constraint.
Prepare your degree equivalency documentation early
For E-3 or H-1B petitions, USCIS requires your degree to directly support the specialty occupation. If your background is in mathematics or physics rather than computer science, get a credential evaluation and a supporting letter from your academic supervisor before the offer stage.
Ask about cap-exempt filing pathways at interview
Microsoft has research lab partnerships with universities that may qualify certain roles for cap-exempt H-1B filing. If you're transitioning from a postdoctoral or research fellowship, ask the recruiter whether your role qualifies before assuming you'll enter the lottery.
Use Migrate Mate to filter AI Scientist openings by visa type
Microsoft posts Artificial Intelligence Scientist roles across multiple divisions, not all of which have the same sponsorship posture. Use Migrate Mate to surface openings filtered by the visa types you're eligible for, so you're targeting the right positions from the start.
Request the LCA details before signing your offer
DOL requires Microsoft to certify a Labor Condition Application specifying your worksite location and prevailing wage level before filing your H-1B petition. If you're remote or based in a different metro than the team, confirm the LCA reflects your actual work location.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Microsoft sponsor H-1B visas for Artificial Intelligence Scientists?
Yes, Microsoft sponsors H-1B visas for Artificial Intelligence Scientist roles. The company has an established immigration legal team that manages filings across its research and applied AI divisions. Cap-subject candidates need to enter the USCIS lottery, which runs in March for an October 1 start date, so offer timing matters.
Which visa types does Microsoft commonly use for Artificial Intelligence Scientist roles?
Microsoft files H-1B petitions for most international AI Scientists, and also sponsors E-3 visas for Australian citizens and H-1B1 visas for candidates from Singapore and Chile. For longer-term pathways, Microsoft supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship, including PERM labor certification, for employees who have established tenure in the role.
What qualifications does Microsoft expect for Artificial Intelligence Scientist positions?
Most Artificial Intelligence Scientist roles at Microsoft require a master's or doctoral degree in computer science, machine learning, statistics, or a closely related field. Research publication records matter, particularly for roles in Microsoft Research. Applied scientist positions on product teams typically weight hands-on experience with large-scale model training and deployment alongside academic credentials.
How do I apply for Artificial Intelligence Scientist jobs at Microsoft?
You can apply directly through Microsoft's careers portal, or use Migrate Mate to browse Artificial Intelligence Scientist openings at Microsoft filtered by the visa types you're eligible for. The process typically involves a recruiter screen, technical assessments covering ML fundamentals and systems design, and a research or applied science presentation round for senior-level roles.
How do I plan my timeline if I need H-1B sponsorship for a Microsoft AI Scientist role?
If you're subject to the H-1B cap, your employment can't start before October 1 of the fiscal year for which you're selected. USCIS opens registration in March and announces results shortly after. Microsoft typically needs several weeks to prepare the petition after selection, so factor in at least six months between offer and your first day if you're entering the lottery.
