About Scale
At Scale AI, our mission is to accelerate the development of AI applications. For 8 years, Scale has been the leading AI data foundry, helping fuel the most exciting advancements in AI, including: generative AI, defense applications, and autonomous vehicles. With our recent Series F round, we’re accelerating the abundance of frontier data to pave the road to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), and building upon our prior model evaluation work with enterprise customers and governments, to deepen our capabilities and offerings for both public and private evaluations.
About The ACE Team
The Agent Capabilities & Environments (ACE) team, part of Scale’s Research organization, brings together customer-facing Researchers and Applied AI Engineers. Our core mission includes research on agent environments and RL reward signals, benchmarking autonomous agent performance across real-world scenarios and environments, creating robust data programs to improve Large Language Models (LLMs) agentic capabilities and building foundational tools and frameworks for evaluating models as agents. ACE focuses on autonomous agents that dynamically interact with diverse external environments, including code repositories, GUI interfaces, browsers, and more.
About This Role
This role is at the intersection of cutting-edge AI research and practical application, with a focus on studying the data types essential for building state-of-the-art agents, such as browser and SWE agents. The ideal candidate will explore the data landscape needed to advance intelligent, adaptable AI agents, guiding the data strategy at Scale to drive innovation. This position requires not only expertise in LLM agents and planning algorithms but also creativity in addressing novel challenges related to data, interaction, and evaluation. You will contribute to impactful research publications on agents, collaborate with customer researchers, and work alongside the engineering team to translate these advancements into real-world, scalable solutions.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Practical experience working with LLMs, with proficiency in frameworks like Pytorch, Jax, or Tensorflow. You should also be adept at interpreting research literature and quickly turning new ideas into prototypes.
- A track record of published research in top ML venues (e.g., ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, COLM, etc.)
- At least three years of experience addressing sophisticated ML problems, either in a research setting or product development.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to operate cross-functionally.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Hands-on experience with open source LLM fine-tuning or involvement in bespoke LLM fine-tuning projects using Pytorch/Jax.
- Hands-on experience and publications in building applications and evaluations related to AI agents such as tool-use, text2SQL, browser agents, coding agents and GUI agents.
- Hands-on experience with agent frameworks such as OpenHands, Swarm, LangGraph, etc.
- Familiarity with agentic reasoning methods such as STaR and PLANSEARCH
- Experience working with cloud technology stack (eg. AWS or GCP) and developing machine learning models in a cloud environment.
Our research interviews are crafted to assess candidates' skills in practical ML prototyping and debugging, their grasp of research concepts, and their alignment with our organizational culture. We will not ask any LeetCode-style questions.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Artificial Intelligence Scientist Jobs at Scale AI Jobs
Tailor your CV for AI research depth
Scale AI's AI Scientist roles expect demonstrated research output, not just engineering experience. Highlight published work, benchmark contributions, or RLHF and data quality research specifically, since those map directly to what Scale AI's technical teams build.
Identify roles matching your visa category
Scale AI sponsors multiple visa types for this function. Cross-reference open AI Scientist listings against the visa types you're eligible for, and use Migrate Mate to filter sponsoring employers by visa category so you're only targeting roles that fit your status.
Verify your OPT timeline before applying
If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm how many months remain before your cap-gap or STEM extension kicks in. Scale AI's hiring timelines for research roles can run eight to fourteen weeks, so starting the process with less than three months on your OPT is a real risk.
Prepare for specialty occupation documentation early
H-1B petitions for AI Scientist roles require USCIS to confirm specialty occupation status. Gather degree transcripts, published papers, and a clear written summary of how your role requires a specialized theoretical and applied AI background before your employer initiates filing.
Ask your recruiter about cap-exempt filing paths
If Scale AI partners with qualifying research institutions or nonprofits, your H-1B petition may be filed cap-exempt, bypassing the annual lottery entirely. Confirm this with your recruiter during the offer stage, since it significantly changes your start date planning.
Align your offer letter scope with your petition
DOL requires the Labor Condition Application to reflect your actual work location and job duties. If your AI Scientist role involves remote work or travel to multiple Scale AI sites, ensure the LCA covers all relevant locations before your employer certifies and files.

Find Artificial Intelligence Scientist at Scale AI JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Scale AI sponsor H-1B visas for Artificial Intelligence Scientists?
Yes, Scale AI sponsors H-1B visas for Artificial Intelligence Scientist roles. AI Scientist positions typically qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS criteria because they require at minimum a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as computer science, machine learning, or statistics. Your employer initiates the H-1B process after extending an offer, and timing depends on whether your petition is subject to the annual cap or cap-exempt.
How do I apply for Artificial Intelligence Scientist jobs at Scale AI?
Applications go through Scale AI's careers page, where AI Scientist listings are posted under their research and applied ML teams. You can also browse open roles that include visa sponsorship on Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for employers sponsoring international candidates. Prepare a CV that reflects research output, relevant publications, and hands-on experience with large-scale data pipelines or model evaluation, since those are common screening criteria at Scale AI.
Which visa types does Scale AI commonly sponsor for Artificial Intelligence Scientist roles?
Scale AI sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, J-1, and Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 for this function. H-1B is the most common route for candidates without country-specific eligibility. Australian citizens often pursue the E-3, which has no lottery and a dedicated annual allocation. TN is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying technical classifications.
What qualifications does Scale AI expect for Artificial Intelligence Scientist roles?
Scale AI generally expects a graduate degree in machine learning, computer science, statistics, or a closely related field for AI Scientist positions, with a PhD preferred for research-track roles. Practical experience with RLHF, model evaluation, or large-scale data quality systems is highly relevant given Scale AI's core business. Published research, open-source contributions, or benchmark work in AI safety or alignment are additional signals that matter during technical screening.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for an Artificial Intelligence Scientist at Scale AI?
Timeline depends on your visa category. For H-1B, cap-subject petitions are tied to the April lottery and October 1 start dates, so the process from offer to authorized start can take six months or more. Premium processing through USCIS can reduce the adjudication window to roughly 15 business days but does not change the statutory start date. E-3 and TN petitions typically move faster, often resolving within a few weeks through consular processing or port of entry admission.
