About Scale
At Scale AI, our mission is to accelerate the development of AI applications. For 8 years, Scale has been the leading AI data foundry, helping fuel the most exciting advancements in AI, including: generative AI, defense applications, and autonomous vehicles. With our recent Series F round, we’re accelerating the abundance of frontier data to pave the road to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), and building upon our prior model evaluation work with enterprise customers and governments, to deepen our capabilities and offerings for both public and private evaluations.
About The ACE Team
The Agent Capabilities & Environments (ACE) team, part of Scale’s Research organization, brings together customer-facing Researchers and Applied AI Engineers. Our core mission includes research on agent environments and RL reward signals, benchmarking autonomous agent performance across real-world scenarios and environments, creating robust data programs to improve Large Language Models (LLMs) agentic capabilities and building foundational tools and frameworks for evaluating models as agents. ACE focuses on autonomous agents that dynamically interact with diverse external environments, including code repositories, GUI interfaces, browsers, and more.
About This Role
This role is at the intersection of cutting-edge AI research and practical application, with a focus on studying the data types essential for building state-of-the-art agents, such as browser and SWE agents. The ideal candidate will explore the data landscape needed to advance intelligent, adaptable AI agents, guiding the data strategy at Scale to drive innovation. This position requires not only expertise in LLM agents and planning algorithms but also creativity in addressing novel challenges related to data, interaction, and evaluation. You will contribute to impactful research publications on agents, collaborate with customer researchers, and work alongside the engineering team to translate these advancements into real-world, scalable solutions.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Practical experience working with LLMs, with proficiency in frameworks like Pytorch, Jax, or Tensorflow. You should also be adept at interpreting research literature and quickly turning new ideas into prototypes.
- A track record of published research in top ML venues (e.g., ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, COLM, etc.)
- At least three years of experience addressing sophisticated ML problems, either in a research setting or product development.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to operate cross-functionally.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Hands-on experience with open source LLM fine-tuning or involvement in bespoke LLM fine-tuning projects using Pytorch/Jax.
- Hands-on experience and publications in building applications and evaluations related to AI agents such as tool-use, text2SQL, browser agents, coding agents and GUI agents.
- Hands-on experience with agent frameworks such as OpenHands, Swarm, LangGraph, etc.
- Familiarity with agentic reasoning methods such as STaR and PLANSEARCH
- Experience working with cloud technology stack (eg. AWS or GCP) and developing machine learning models in a cloud environment.
Our research interviews are crafted to assess candidates' skills in practical ML prototyping and debugging, their grasp of research concepts, and their alignment with our organizational culture. We will not ask any LeetCode-style questions.

Align your credentials to AI research standards
Scale AI's Research hiring emphasizes demonstrated output: published work, benchmark contributions, or applied ML research. Before applying, organize your CV around research artifacts rather than job titles so reviewers can evaluate your track record quickly.
Target roles matching your specialty occupation evidence
USCIS requires H-1B petitions to document a direct connection between your degree field and the specific role. Research positions in AI evaluation, alignment, or data science each have distinct degree-to-role mappings, so apply to the title that matches your academic background precisely.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Research openings by visa type
Scale AI posts Research roles across multiple teams with varying sponsorship eligibility. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for sponsored Research positions so you're not spending time on roles that won't move forward for international candidates.
Engage Scale AI's recruiting team before the H-1B lottery
H-1B cap registration opens in March for an October 1 start date. If you're not currently in H-1B status, start conversations with Scale AI recruiters by January so there's enough runway to complete interviews, extend an offer, and register before the USCIS deadline.
Clarify OPT STEM extension eligibility early in the process
Scale AI qualifies as a STEM OPT employer through E-Verify enrollment. If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your degree CIP code is on the DHS STEM list before your initial OPT expires, since the 24-month extension application must be filed with USCIS before the original EAD runs out.
Prepare for LCA prevailing wage requirements in your offer negotiation
DOL requires Scale AI to pay the prevailing wage for your role and work location before certifying the Labor Condition Application. Research the Level I through Level IV wage tiers for your specific job title so you understand the floor your offer must meet before the LCA is filed.

Find Research at Scale AI JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Scale AI sponsor H-1B visas for Researchs?
Yes, Scale AI sponsors H-1B visas for Research roles. The company has an established pattern of filing H-1B petitions for technical and scientific positions across its research functions. If you're currently on F-1 OPT or another H-1B-eligible status, Research roles at Scale AI are a legitimate pathway, though cap-subject petitions are tied to the annual March registration window.
Which visa types are commonly used for Research roles at Scale AI?
Research roles at Scale AI are commonly filled through H-1B, F-1 OPT with STEM extension, E-3 (for Australian citizens), and TN (for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying research occupations). Candidates already in the U.S. on F-1 CPT or J-1 may also be eligible depending on program terms. EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa sponsorship is possible for longer-term hires moving toward permanent residence.
What qualifications are expected for Research positions at Scale AI?
Research roles at Scale AI typically require a graduate degree in machine learning, computer science, statistics, or a related quantitative field, along with evidence of applied research output such as publications, preprints, or benchmark contributions. Roles focused on RLHF, model evaluation, or AI alignment increasingly value candidates with hands-on experience designing human feedback pipelines or red-teaming language models.
How do I apply for Research jobs at Scale AI?
You can browse and filter open Research positions at Scale AI through Migrate Mate, which surfaces roles by visa sponsorship type so international candidates can identify relevant openings quickly. Once you identify a target role, apply directly through Scale AI's careers portal. Tailor your application to emphasize research output and align your stated degree field with the specific role title to support any future H-1B specialty occupation documentation.
How do I time my job search to hit Scale AI's H-1B filing window?
USCIS opens H-1B cap registration each March for an October 1 start date. To stay on track, aim to complete interviews and receive an offer from Scale AI by late January or early February. That gives the employer time to work with immigration counsel, prepare the Labor Condition Application through DOL, and register your petition before the March window closes.
