Align your research portfolio to Scale's work
Scale AI's AI Research Engineer roles center on reinforcement learning from human feedback, model evaluation, and data pipeline quality. Frame your published work, projects, or thesis around these areas before applying, not after you get the interview.
Verify your OPT or CPT timeline before applying
If you're on F-1 status, confirm your OPT start date and the 60-day cap on unemployment. Scale AI's hiring cycles can run six to ten weeks, so apply early enough that your authorization covers the full onboarding window.
Target roles that specify specialty occupation criteria
For H-1B sponsorship, USCIS requires the position to qualify as a specialty occupation. Look for Scale AI job postings that explicitly require a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field like computer science, machine learning, or statistics.
Understand Scale AI's LCA obligations before negotiating
Every H-1B and E-3 offer requires a certified Labor Condition Application filed with the DOL. The LCA locks in a prevailing wage for your role and location, so research DOL wage levels for AI Research Engineers in Scale AI's office locations before discussing compensation.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Scale AI's open AI Research Engineer roles
Browsing general job boards won't show you which postings are open to sponsored candidates. Use Migrate Mate to filter AI Research Engineer openings at Scale AI by visa type, so you're only spending time on roles where your immigration situation is already accounted for.
Prepare your EB-2 or EB-3 conversation early in the offer stage
Scale AI sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways for this function. Ask your recruiter about the PERM labor certification timeline during offer negotiation, not after you've started, so you understand when the process typically begins for engineers at your level.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Scale AI sponsor H-1B visas for AI Research Engineers?
Yes, Scale AI sponsors H-1B visas for AI Research Engineers. The H-1B requires the role to qualify as a specialty occupation, which AI Research Engineer positions at Scale AI consistently meet given the degree requirements in fields like computer science or machine learning. Your employer files the petition with USCIS, and you're subject to the annual H-1B cap and lottery unless you qualify for a cap-exempt filing.
Which visa types are commonly used for AI Research Engineer roles at Scale AI?
Scale AI sponsors several visa categories for this function, including H-1B, E-3 visa for Australian citizens, TN visa for Canadian and Mexican nationals, F-1 OPT and CPT for current students, J-1 visa for exchange visitors, and EB-2 or EB-3 immigrant visas for permanent residence pathways. The right category depends on your nationality, educational background, and where you are in your career.
How do I apply for AI Research Engineer jobs at Scale AI?
You can find and apply for AI Research Engineer positions at Scale AI through Migrate Mate, which filters open roles by visa sponsorship type so you can confirm your immigration situation fits before applying. When you apply, expect a technical screen focused on machine learning fundamentals, followed by a research presentation or coding assessment, and a final loop with the engineering and research teams.
What qualifications does Scale AI expect for AI Research Engineer roles?
Scale AI typically expects a master's degree or PhD in computer science, machine learning, or a related quantitative field for AI Research Engineer positions, along with hands-on experience in model training, evaluation, or data quality research. Familiarity with reinforcement learning from human feedback, large language model fine-tuning, or annotation pipeline design gives candidates a practical edge in the interview process.
How do I time my visa sponsorship process when joining Scale AI?
Timing depends on your current status. F-1 OPT holders should confirm their remaining work authorization covers Scale AI's full hiring and onboarding timeline, which can take two to three months. H-1B transfers from another employer can begin on day one under portability rules if a petition is filed promptly. For new H-1B filings, USCIS standard processing runs three to five months, with premium processing available to expedite to around 15 business days.
