INTRODUCTION
The Public Sector software engineers (SWEs) create the core product building blocks forward-deployed teams use to develop agentic capabilities that function across multiple domains. SWEs responsibilities include building the systems required to ingest and process federal datasets to support real-time decision-making in contested environments. We develop novel agentic enabling capabilities that includes:
- Create multi-layered guardrails around agents
- Optimize data retrieval for agents
- Orchestrate fleets of asynchronous agents
- Automatically alerts users to deviations in data
- Illustrating how an agent reached a decision
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will orchestrate the implementation of vertical features and horizontal capabilities to include mentoring other engineers on defining requirements with stakeholders and communication tradeoffs of technical implementations on feature and capabilities until they are accepted by the stakeholders.
You will: Orchestrate feature implementation across the Federal engineering team to ensure architectural consistency.
- Define technical strategy for agentic guardrails, explainability, and fleet orchestration.
- Ensure system reliability and performance across multiple security classifications and network types.
- Mentor engineers in the process of defining requirements with stakeholders and gathering acceptance.
- Communicate high-level technical trade-offs and implementation strategies to senior government stakeholders and Scale C-Suite members.
- Influence the long-term product strategy and technical roadmap for the Federal business unit.
- Consult on the architecture of AI-powered solutions for large-scale federal contracts.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Ideally you will have:
- Full Stack Development: Proficiency in front-end, back-end development and infrastructure, including experience with modern web development frameworks, programming languages, and databases
- Cloud-Native Technologies: Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and experience in developing and deploying applications in a cloud-native environment. Understanding of containerization (e.g., Docker) and container orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes) is a plus
- Data Engineering: Knowledge of ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes and experience in building data pipelines to integrate and process diverse data sources. Understanding of data modeling, data warehousing, and data governance principles
- AI Application Integration: Familiarity with integrating Large Language Models (LLMs) and building agentic workflows. Understanding of prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and agent orchestration is beneficial.
- Problem Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to understand complex challenges and devise effective solutions. Ability to think critically, identify root causes, and propose innovative approaches to overcome technical obstacles
- Collaboration and Communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams, stakeholders, and customers. Ability to clearly articulate technical concepts to non-technical audiences and foster a collaborative work environment
- Adaptability and Learning Agility: Willingness to embrace new technologies, learn new skills, and adapt to defining and evolving project requirements. Ability to quickly grasp and apply new concepts and stay up-to-date with emerging trends in software engineering

Align your experience to AI data infrastructure
Scale AI's Staff Software Engineer roles center on data labeling pipelines, model evaluation systems, and high-throughput infrastructure. Tailor your resume to highlight distributed systems, ML data workflows, or platform engineering work rather than generic full-stack experience.
Verify your visa type before applying
Scale AI sponsors H-1B, E-3, TN, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and J-1 visas for this role. Confirm your current status qualifies before submitting. If you're on OPT, check your remaining authorized period against Scale AI's typical offer-to-start timelines.
Prepare for a systems design-heavy interview process
Staff-level interviews at AI infrastructure companies like Scale AI emphasize large-scale system design, cross-functional technical leadership, and ambiguous problem scoping. Prepare concrete examples of systems you've owned end-to-end, not just features you contributed to.
Time your H-1B cap filing with your offer
If you need an H-1B, remember USCIS only opens registration once per year in March for an October 1 start. If you receive an offer outside that window, clarify with your recruiter whether cap-exempt options or bridge status like OPT STEM extension apply to your situation.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Staff Engineer roles
Scale AI posts Staff Software Engineer openings across multiple teams with varying sponsorship scope. Use Migrate Mate to filter active roles by visa type so you're only targeting positions where your specific authorization is confirmed before you invest time in the application.
Confirm LCA coverage before your start date
Your employer must file a certified Labor Condition Application with the DOL before USCIS can approve your H-1B petition. Ask your Scale AI recruiter or immigration contact when the LCA was filed for your specific role and work location to avoid delays in your start date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Scale AI sponsor H-1B visas for Staff Software Engineers?
Yes, Scale AI sponsors H-1B visas for Staff Software Engineer roles. Sponsorship covers the full petition process, including the Labor Condition Application filed with the DOL. If you're subject to the H-1B cap, timing matters: USCIS registration opens in March each year, with an October 1 start date for selected petitions.
Which visa types does Scale AI sponsor for Staff Software Engineer roles?
Scale AI sponsors a broad range of visa types for this role, including H-1B, E-3 visa for Australian citizens, TN visa for Canadian and Mexican nationals, F-1 OPT and CPT for students, J-1 visa, and Green Card pathways via EB-2 and EB-3 categories. The right category depends on your nationality, education, and current immigration status.
How do I apply for Staff Software Engineer jobs at Scale AI?
You can find and filter open Staff Software Engineer roles at Scale AI by visa type on Migrate Mate, which surfaces only roles where your specific authorization is confirmed. Applications go through Scale AI's careers portal. The process typically includes a recruiter screen, technical assessments focused on systems design, and final-round interviews with engineering leadership.
What qualifications does Scale AI expect for a Staff Software Engineer?
Staff Software Engineers at Scale AI are expected to bring deep experience in large-scale distributed systems, data infrastructure, or platform engineering. Hands-on work with ML data pipelines, high-throughput processing systems, or foundational AI tooling is highly relevant. Technical leadership experience, including driving cross-team architecture decisions, is a common expectation at the staff level.
How do I plan my timeline if I need visa sponsorship at Scale AI?
Timeline depends on your visa category. F-1 OPT authorization can take up to 90 days from USCIS, so apply early if your current OPT is expiring. H-1B sponsorship follows a fixed annual cycle tied to USCIS's March registration window. E-3 and TN visas move faster and aren't cap-subject, which gives those applicants more scheduling flexibility with their start date.
