Build Azure-native skills before applying
Microsoft's data engineering intern projects run heavily on Azure Data Factory, Synapse, and Databricks. Hands-on experience with these tools, not just general Spark or SQL, signals you can contribute from week one and strengthens your application.
Target teams with intern-to-return conversion history
Microsoft's intern program has a structured return offer pipeline. Apply to org-specific postings under Azure, M365, or AI Platform, where intern-to-full-time conversion rates are higher and sponsorship infrastructure for new grad H-1B filing is already in place.
Align your OPT start date with your internship end
If you're on F-1 status, time your OPT activation so it begins when the internship ends. That preserves your full 12-month window and keeps you work-authorized through the H-1B cap registration period in March, which Microsoft participates in annually.
Confirm E-3 eligibility before your offer stage
Australian citizens can sidestep the H-1B lottery entirely using the E-3 visa. If you hold Australian citizenship, flag this during the offer conversation. Microsoft's immigration team is familiar with E-3 processing, and it removes lottery risk from your timeline.
Use Migrate Mate to identify open Data Engineering Intern roles
Filtering for roles that explicitly support visa sponsorship saves you from applying to positions that won't move forward for international candidates. Migrate Mate surfaces Microsoft's current Data Engineering Intern openings alongside verified sponsorship history for this function.
Request the LCA job code during your offer review
Before signing, ask Microsoft's recruiting coordinator which Standard Occupational Classification code they'll use on your Labor Condition Application. This determines prevailing wage tier and affects both your salary floor and the DOL filing timeline for any future full-time petition.

Does Microsoft sponsor H-1B visas for Data Engineering Interns?
Yes. Microsoft sponsors H-1B visas for eligible candidates who convert from intern to full-time roles. The internship itself typically runs on F-1 OPT or CPT, not H-1B status, since H-1B requires a full-time position and USCIS approval. If you receive a return offer, Microsoft's immigration team manages the H-1B cap registration process, which opens each March for an October 1 start date.
How do I apply for Data Engineering Intern jobs at Microsoft?
Applications go through Microsoft's careers portal at careers.microsoft.com. Search for Data Engineering Intern roles filtered by your target org, such as Azure or AI Platform. Migrate Mate also lists Microsoft's current Data Engineering Intern openings with verified sponsorship details, which helps you focus on roles where international candidates are actively considered. Recruiting cycles for summer internships typically open between August and November.
Which visa types does Microsoft use for Data Engineering Intern roles?
During the internship itself, most international students work on F-1 CPT or F-1 OPT. For full-time conversion after graduation, Microsoft sponsors the H-1B, E-3 for Australian citizens, H-1B1 for Chilean and Singaporean nationals, and immigrant visa pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 for longer-term permanent residency. The right visa depends on your nationality and the timing of your offer.
What qualifications does Microsoft expect for Data Engineering Intern candidates?
Microsoft looks for candidates pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related engineering field. Practical experience with distributed data systems, cloud platforms like Azure, and languages such as Python, SQL, or Scala carries significant weight. Internship projects or coursework involving pipeline development, data modeling, or large-scale storage systems make the strongest applications for this specific function.
How do I plan my timeline if I need visa sponsorship after the internship?
If you're on F-1 OPT after the internship ends, you have up to 12 months of work authorization, with a potential 24-month STEM extension. Microsoft's H-1B cap registrations are submitted each March for roles starting October 1. That means an internship ending in August gives you a narrow window, so confirming your return offer and immigration plan with Microsoft's HR team well before October is important.
