Align your portfolio with Microsoft's systems scale
Microsoft backend interviews emphasize distributed systems design, fault tolerance, and high-throughput APIs. Before applying, build or document projects that demonstrate experience with systems operating at cloud scale, not just standard CRUD applications.
Target teams with consistent sponsorship histories
Azure infrastructure, Microsoft 365 platform, and developer tooling teams have historically filed LCAs with the DOL for backend roles. Cross-referencing DOL OFLC disclosure data helps you identify which internal orgs actively sponsor, so you can prioritize those hiring managers.
Find Microsoft's sponsored Backend Engineer openings on Migrate Mate
Search Migrate Mate to filter Microsoft backend roles by visa type before applying. This saves time by surfacing positions where sponsorship is already part of the offer process, rather than asking hiring managers upfront.
Prepare your credentials before the H-1B cap deadline
Microsoft files H-1B registrations in March for the October 1 fiscal year start. Have your degree evaluations, transcripts, and employment verification letters ready by February so your employer's immigration counsel can prepare the petition without delays.
Understand how USCIS specialty occupation applies to your role
USCIS scrutinizes whether backend engineering positions require a degree in a specific technical field. Roles titled 'Software Engineer II' with well-defined computer science requirements pass more cleanly than ambiguous titles, so confirm the exact job title before your offer letter is finalized.

Find Backend Engineer at Microsoft JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Microsoft sponsor H-1B visas for Backend Engineers?
Yes, Microsoft sponsors H-1B visas for Backend Engineers. Sponsorship is initiated after you receive and accept an offer. Microsoft's in-house immigration team works with outside counsel to file the H-1B petition, which means you won't manage the process alone. Roles need to qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS standards, and backend engineering positions with a defined computer science degree requirement generally meet that threshold.
Which visa types does Microsoft commonly sponsor for Backend Engineer roles?
Microsoft sponsors H-1B visas for most international backend hires. Australian citizens are eligible for the E-3 visa, which avoids the H-1B lottery entirely and runs on a separate annual cap. For longer-term immigration, Microsoft supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card petitions, including the PERM labor certification process, for engineers in qualifying roles. H-1B1 is also available for Chilean and Singaporean nationals.
What qualifications does Microsoft expect for Backend Engineer candidates needing sponsorship?
Microsoft generally expects a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field for backend roles. Strong proficiency in languages like C++, C#, Java, or Python is expected, along with demonstrated experience in distributed systems, APIs, or cloud services. USCIS requires the role to have a direct relationship between the degree field and the job duties, so a clearly matched educational background matters.
How do I apply for Backend Engineer jobs at Microsoft?
Browse Backend Engineer openings at Microsoft on Migrate Mate, which filters for roles where visa sponsorship is available. Once you identify a position, apply through Microsoft's careers portal. The interview process typically includes a recruiter screen, coding assessments focused on algorithms and system design, and a virtual or onsite loop with the engineering team. Sponsorship discussions generally happen after an offer is extended.
How do I plan my timeline if I need Microsoft to sponsor my visa?
If you're relying on the H-1B, the registration window opens in early March and the lottery results come in late March, with petitions filed by June for an October 1 start date. If you're on OPT, cap-gap protection can keep you authorized through the wait. E-3 visas for Australians can be processed through a U.S. consulate in a matter of weeks once the LCA is certified by the DOL, giving you a faster path to a start date.
